The Penn State Nittany Lions hit the road tonight in Big Ten college basketball action when they take on the No. 24 Ohio State Buckeyes. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time and it will be televised live on the Big Ten Network. Currently the odds for the game have Ohio State as a healthy favorite to get this home win.
Ohio State has had an interesting season, rising to No. 3 in the rankings but quickly falling back to earth. The Buckeyes dropped four straight conference games to Michigan State, Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska. But in their last game they gained some footing by beating Illinois at home and now they host the worst team in the conference.
The Nittany Lions are just 1-6 in the Big Ten. Ohio State has won 18 straight games over Penn State and the Nittany Lions have lost 20 of their last 21 games on the road in conference. Penn State has also lost nine straight trips to Columbus. Neither of those bode well for Penn Sate tonight. But the Nittany Lions are coming off a victory over Nebraska. Maybe they can build upon that victory and stay close enough in this one to make it competitive down the stretch.
Penn State has two very good players in D.J. Newbill and Tim Frazier in the backcourt. The guard duo combine for nearly 34 points per game and OSU head coach Thad Matta acknowledged the Nittany Lions have been pretty competitive this season. Their 10-10 record doesn't indicate that Ohio State is just going to roll over and pick up a bigtime win here tonight.
Aaron Craft is arguably the best player on the floor tonight and he'll be looking to take the game over. He has 24 assists in the team's last five games in this series. He's also led the Buckeyes to winning by an average of 17.5 points per game in the last four. The two met last year with Ohio State winning 65-51. Sam Thompson led the Buckeyes with 16 points in that one.
Ohio State is probably too much for the Nittany Lions tonight. The Buckeyes have gone 13-1 in home games this season. Penn State is just 2-4 in their road games. We like the Buckeyes to get it done, but we think Penn State will be able to keep it close.
