Analysis: The Broncos, who wrapped up the AFC West and a first-round bye by routing the lowly Texans, can make sure the road to Super Bowl XLVIII runs through Mile High on the AFC side of things by winning at Oakland on Sunday. Peyton Manning appears to be a shoo-in for an unprecedented fifth NFL MVP award, after passing for 5000+ yards for the first time in his career, while also breaking Tom Brady's NFL record for touchdowns in a season with 51. Manning guides an offense that averages a league-best 38.1 points and he has a ton of weapons at his disposal with 5 players that have at least 10 TDs on the year. Defense, though, could be the downfall of this team in the playoffs as they come in ranked 22nd overall, 28th vs the pass and 22nd in points allowed, giving up 25.7 ppg. The defense took a big hit this past weekend as they lost Von Miller for the remainder of the year.
The Raiders, meanwhile, are enduring their 11th straight season playing .500 football or worse. Oakland hasn't had a winning campaign since finishing 11-5 in 2002 en route to losing Super Bowl XXXVII to Tampa Bay. Terrell Pryor completed 68.3% of his passes with 4 TDs and 2 INTs in his first four starts and he also went 19 of 28 for 281 yards and a score in the loss at Denver. But he struggled in his last four starts, completing 50.8 percent of his attempts with one touchdown and eight picks before missing time with a sprained MCL. Pryor has been effective in the running game, totaling 527 yards on 7.1 per carry and 2 TDs this year. The running game in this one will need to step up so they can play keep away from Manning and the offense, especially since defensively they have allowed an average of 37.5 ppg their last four games.
Pick: Gotta like the Broncos in this one. They need this game in the worst way to ensure that they will get homefield throughout the playoffs and with New England playing Buffalo at home, The Broncos cannot take any chances here. Denver is far superior on the offensive side of the ball and the Broncos have won the last 4 in the series by at least 13 points each. Okland stands no chance vs a motivated Broncos team in this one.
