The Rice Owls hit the road on Saturday college football action when they take on the Texas-San Antonio RoadRunners. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start time. Currently the odds for the game have RoadRunners favored at home to win.
Rice has opened up the season with a 3-2 record, but they have won both conference games with Florida Atlantic and Tulsa. Their only two losses came to bigger schools in Texas A&M and Houston. They had an opportunity to win that game against Houston, but weren't able to get it done.
Texas-San Antonio is not very good this season, although Larry Coker is doing his best to keep the program improving. They have wins over New Mexico and UTEP, but have been beaten by Oklahoma State, Arizona, Houston and Marshall. Can the RoadRunners rise up here in a home game against an in-state team in Rice and get a win? UTSA managed just 254 yards at Marshall last week, and they'll have to do better in this one and we believe they will. The RoadRunners are pretty gritty and they usually have a good performance when they are playing in the Alamodome.
Rice won by 20 points last season at home, so there is a bit of revenge here for UTSA. The RoadRunners usually get 40,000 plus in their home games and we expect nothing less in this one, giving them a solid home crowd with an in-state team coming in to play.
One of the problems for UTSA, though, is their inability to win the turnover battle. The RoadRunners are -11 in turnover differential this season, which is certainly not good. Rice sits at +2. If you're looking for a simple way to break down this game — Rice lost to Houston by 3, UTSA lost by 31. Maybe that has something to do with this game. But we like UTSA to keep it close. Turnovers will be huge and if UTSA can hang onto the football they'll be OK.
