Two teams, New York Jets and Tennessee Titans, most pundits expected to contend for the cellar in their respective divisions will each seek their third win of the young season when they square off at LP Field this afternoon. Kickoff in this AFC clash is set for 4:05pm ET on CBS. The latest NFL Betting Line Odds from offshore bookmaker 5Dimes have the hosting Titans listed as a -3.5 against the spread and -185 money line ($185 wins $100) favorite. The total in today's showdown between the Jet and Titans is presently set at 40.5 points.
Rookie quarterback Geno Smith has not been spectacular through three NFL starts, posting a 65 passer rating after throwing three touchdowns to six interceptions, but fortunately for the Jets, they have not needed him to be the second coming of Joe Namath.
New York's defense has been spectacular in the early going, limiting opponents to an average of 16.7 points and 270 yards per game.
The Titans can attribute their surprising early success this season to a similar formula as they rank ninth in yards per game allowed (307.7) and 10th in scoring defense (18.7). The two teams also sport identical yards per carry and rush yards per game averages (3.9, 133.7)
Meanwhile third year quarterback Jake Locker has shown marked improvement as he brings an 89.8 passer rating into today's game. Locker was exceptional in last week's win over San Diego, throwing for 299 yards and one touchdown while also rushing for 68 yards and one score on five carries.
Locker may find the Jets defense less accommodating than the Chargers unit, though. The collective passer rating of the three quarterbacks who opposed New York this season, a group that includes Tom Brady, is an ugly 70.3.
Game Notes: The Jets have covered the spread in four out of the five meetings between these two teams in Tennessee and they are also 4-1 against the spread in their last five games as a road dog with a spread between 0 and 3.5 points and a total between 37 and 41 points. Tennessee did defeat New York in the most recent scarp between the two squads, knocking off the Jets 14-10 last December as a one point home dog.
