2013 UAB Blazers Schedule, Preview

The UAB Blazers 2013 schedule includes 6 road games and 6 home games. The Blazers have non-conference road games vs LSU and Vanderbilt and they will face 6 teams that were bowl eligible last year. Their full schedule is listed below, but first let's preview the 2013 UAB Blazers.

The UAB Blazer had a rough year in the standings in 2012, but they did show progress on the field, by gaining 55 ypg more than 2011, while allowing 58 ypg less than their previous year. Now they have 16 starters back and with some weaker Sun Belt teams coming in, UAB could actually be in the hunt for some form of minor bowl invite in 2013!

UAB returns 8 starters to an offense that put up 28.3 ppg last year, including both starting QB's that saw some action. The WR corp is solid despite losing 2 of their top 3 from last year. The do have 6 of their top 8 pass catchers back overall, including last years leading receiver Jackie Williams. The running last last year put up just 110 ypg, but that should improve with their top 3 RB's back from a year ago. Helping the running game also is 3 returning starter to the OL, with a combined 45 career starts.

The UAB defense had it's struggles last year, allowing 37.5 ppg and 427 ypg. It was equally bad vs the run (183 ypg allowed) as the pass (245 ypg allowed). Injuries did hurt this group last year, but it will pay dividends this year as a lot of youngsters were able to get valuable time. All in all 8 starters return to the defense and 28 of 35 lettermen from last year. The Line is deep and returns all 4 starters from last year. The LB corps had struggles last year, but with 6 of their top 8 returning they should be much stronger this year. The Secondary allowed too many big plays last year and must really step up if the Blazers are to get better on this side of the ball.

There are no overnight solutions for this team, but McGee has them pointed in the right direction. They improved greatly on both sides of the ball last year and I expect more improvements this year, especially with 16 starters and 50 lettermen returning. McGee continues to recruit well, the offense will be very good and the defense can only get better. This is a watered down Conference USA and that has me expecting a minor bowl invite for the Blazers this year. Key Trends: 7-0 ATS vs a .700 or better opponent with revenge... 1-7 ATS away off SU & ATS win vs conference opponent... 1-5 ATS after playing Marshall.
