Virginia Tech Hokies 2013 Preview, Schedule

The 2013 Virginia Tech Hokies open their schedule vs defending champ Alabama and they close the year with 3 of 4 games on the road. Overall they have 6 home games and 5 true road games and they avoid both Clemson and Florida State out of the Atlantic Division. Their full schedule is listed below, but first let's preview the 2013 Virginia Tech Hokies.

Frank Beamer has seen just about everything in his 27 years at Virginia Tech. Needing to rebound from a horrendous season, though, is going to feel like a new adventure for the venerable head coach. The Hokies are coming off their worst season in two decades, finishing 7-6 in a year that they were expected to once again compete for an ACC title.

The Hokies were abysmal with the ball last year, ranking 81st nationally in total and scoring offense. And they regressed down the stretch, averaging 19 points over the final six games. Beamer responded by replacing underachieving coordinator Bryan Stinespring with Scot Loeffler, whose main priority will be to revamp the throwing motion and the confidence of QB Logan Thomas. Thomas will be entering his third year as the starter under center. Despite his struggles (51.2 completion percentage, 16 INTs) last season, Thomas broke his own single-season school record for total offense. The talent is clearly there; it’s just a matter of Thomas getting the most out of it on the field. Virginia Tech went from No. 28 in the nation in rushing offense (186.9 ypg) in 2011 to No. 79 (145.9 ypg) last season. Quarterback Logan Thomas was the team’s leading returning rusher in 2012 with 524 yards, marking the first time in two decades (1992) that the Hokies’ top rusher had less than 600 yards. Redshirt Freshman running back Trey looks to join Thomas in the backfield with hopes to bring yet another 1,000-yard season back to Blacksburg, something that didn’t happen last season. The offensive line starting 5 is all upperclassmen, lead by Senior center Andrew Miller who looks to rebound, as do the rest of the offensive line, from injuries. Their veteran presence will surely help Thomas provided they stay healthy.

Defensively, the Hokies have 9 starters returning including Senior Defensive Ends JR Collins and James Gayle who, along with the rest of the defense, look to build off of their stout play the last seven games of the year. After allowing 196 rushing yards per game in the first six games, the Hokies D tightened up and only allowed 80 rushing yards a game in the final 7 games with five of those games coming against bowl-eligible teams. Senor corner Antwan Exum looks to build off his Junior year which saw him named 2nd team All-ACC and will be joined by fellow Senior Kyle Fuller and Juniors Kyshoen Jarrett and Detrick Bonner in the defensive backfield.

In what looks to be a rebound year for the Hokies, I expect them to forget about last year and return to their winning ways. The Offense should be improved, but the OL must hold up. The Defense will return to it's old self and be one if the best in the nation. The Schedule isn't too daunting, but road games vs Georgia Tech and Miami should be enough to keep them out of the ACC title game. Key Trends--- 0-6 ATS last 6 vs Pittsburgh... 12-0 ATS at home with revenge off a SU loss... 18-4 ATS as conference road favorites of 8 points or less.
