Analysis: The New York Mets are this season’s marathon men. They’ve played four games of 15 or more innings, including Monday’s 16-inning, 4-3 series-opening victory over the struggling San Francisco Giants. The Mets have also won their past three games in San Francisco. They haven't won four in a row in the series since an eight-game run June 3-May 16, 2009. New York is also seeking its first three-game win streak since claiming a season-best five in a row May 26-30. 3B David Wright is batting .324 (12-for-37) during his nine-game hitting streak. Dillon Gee continued his recent surge with an impressive outing against the Diamondbacks last Thursday, when he allowed two runs over seven innings. The 27-year-old is 4-1 with a 2.47 ERA over his past seven starts, with 47 strikeouts in 47 1/3 innings. He’s 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in three career games (two starts) against the Giants.

The Giants have lost 12 of their last 14 to fall a season-high 6 1/2 games behind first-place Arizona in the National League West. San Francisco has scored two or fewer runs in 12 of its last 17 games, and there is plenty of blame to go around. Buster Posey had a career-high five hits for San Francisco, but Brandon Belt, hitting .136 in his last five games, went 0 for 8 with five strikeouts. Pablo Sandoval is 4 for 47 (.085) in his last 12 contests, and Hunter Pence is 3 for 42 (.071) in his past 11. Shortstop Brandon Crawford broke out of a 7-for-58 slump with three hits Monday, but his rare defensive miscue allowed the Mets to score the go-ahead run in the 16th inning. After winning three of his first four starts this season, Zito has struggled in recent weeks with an 0-3 record and a 4.44 ERA over his last six outings. The 35-year-old Zito, who is 4-1 with a 1.98 ERA in 10 home starts, allowed one run over four-plus innings against the Reds last Wednesday. He’s 3-3 with a 4.43 ERA in eight career starts against the Mets.

Pick: Barry Zito has great home numbers, compared to his road numbers and the Giants have been awesome in his home starts the last 2 years, but a couple things have kept this from being a top play. One is the fact that the Mets are playing better ball right now than the Giants and 2 is the fact that Zito is 0-4 with an 8.18 ERA and a 2.27 WHIP in 7 night starts this year. Having said that I still feel the Giants are the way to go. Zito is 4-1 with a 1.98 ERA at home, while Gee is 3-4 with a 6.06 ERA on the road. Gee faced the Giants once in his career (last year) and he allowed 7 ER's in 6.2 innings in that start, while Zito has allowed 3 ER's or less in 6 of his 8 career starts vs the Mets. Look for the Giants to bounceback after their tough 16 inning loss last night.
