Analysis: The Cardinals, who fell one game behind Pittsburgh for first place in the National League Central, are 13-13 this month after going 20-7 in May. The St. Louis Cardinals have boasted baseball's best starting rotation this season. But lately, it's buckled, along with the Cardinals' NL Central lead. After another uncharacteristically poor pitching performance, St. Louis will look to staff ace Adam Wainwright to right the ship today against the Oakland Athletics. The Cardinals starters' ERA of 3.14 this season leads baseball, but they've posted a 6.75 mark during a 1-5 stretch after a 6-1 loss at Oakland on Friday. Adam Wainwright is unbeaten on the road since losing his season debut at Arizona on April 1, going 7-0 with a no-decision. The 31-year-old is coming off his second straight loss, a home defeat to Texas in which he yielded two runs - one earned - and six hits in 6 2/3 innings. Wainwright limited Oakland to an unearned run over eight frames en route to victory in his only career start against the Athletics on June 19, 2010. Matt Carpenter went 2 for 4 on Friday and is batting .382 during an eight-game hitting streak.

The Oakland Athletics look to make it four wins in a row today in the middle contest of their three-game interleague series. Oakland followed a 4-2 homestand by dropping five of seven on the road. The Athletics returned home to sweep a brief two-game set against the Cincinnati Reds before cruising to a 6-1 triumph over St. Louis in Friday's opener. Bartolo Colon extended his winning streak to eight starts, tossing eight strong innings to notch his 11th victory of the season - his highest total since going 21-8 and winning the American League Cy Young Award in 2005 while with the Los Angeles Angels. Jed Lowrie went 1 for 3 with a double Friday and is batting .464 during a seven-game hitting streak. Josh Donaldson, who had homered in each of his previous two contests, went 2 for 3 and is at .359 with 10 RBIs in his last 11 games. Jarod Parker is looking to extend his winning streak to five games. The 24-year-old settled for a no-decision at Seattle on Sunday after yielding three runs in seven innings. Parker, who is 3-3 with a 4.88 ERA in eight home starts this season, never has faced the Cardinals.

Pick: I will look for the Cardinals to pick up a big road win here. The Cards are the best road team in the league, going 26-15 away from home and they really love facing righties, going 40-20 vs them on the year, plus St Louis is also 16-10 in day games. The A's have been solid at home, but in day games they are just 14-17, averaging just 3.8 rpg in those games. Today they may have troubles getting their offense going as Adam Wainright comes in with a 7-1 mark and a 2.71 ERA on the road, while in 7 day starts he is 5-1 with a 2.28 ERA. Jarod Parker has pitched well of late for the A's, but he is still just 3-3 with a 4.88 ERA at home, while in 5 day starts he is 1-2 with a 4.55 ERA. Because they have done so well on the road and vs righties , plus the fact that Adam is the better pitcher here, I will go with the Cardinal to bounce back in this one.
