The UFC is just over two weeks away from a much anticipated, monster fight card as long reigning middleweight champion Anderson Silva puts his title on the line at UFC 162 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The pay per view event is scheduled to get underway at 10:00pm ET on Saturday, July 6th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Silva will face undefeated Chris Weidman in the main event; early UFC 162 odds have the champion listed as a -225 moneyline favorite ($225 wins $100). The undercard features a number of great matchups, including a featherweight battle between former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and jiu-jitsu ace Charles Oliveira. Edgar is a heavy -550 moneyline favorite to defeat Oliveira.
Anderson Silva has long been an invincible UFC force, posting a 16-0 record with 11 KO/TKO finishes inside the Octagon. Despite his unbelievable resume and ridiculous skill set, some believe the champion will have a difficult time with Chris Weidman.
While the odds makers are in Silva’s corner, they are not backing him in their usual manner as he often draws lines between -500 and -800. The -225 number suggests “The Spider” may be in for a more difficult than usual evening.
Weidman certainly fits the part of live dog with a 9-0 professional record that includes five first round finishes. An All-American college wrestler with a tremendous jiu-jitsu pedigree, Weidman is dangerous to say the least. Is he dangerous enough to beat Silva? That remains to be seen; however, at least one prominent fighter, Chael Sonnen, thinks Weidman has what it takes to get the job done.
“You don’t have to look too far to realize Chris Weidman has the exact skill set to beat Anderson Silva,” Sonnen said on UFC Tonight. “And he’s got it upstairs.”
