Analysis: Life on the road is starting to catch up with the Atlanta Braves, who will look to avoid a three-game sweep by the host Detroit Tigers on Sunday. The Braves have dropped three straight and seven of 10 following their blistering 12-1 start as they prepare to play their 16th road game of the young season. Justin Upton provided one of the bright spots Saturday with his league-leading 12th home run. Upton, though, has batted .250 on the trip after hitting .333 in the first 14 games. B.J. Upton has continued to struggle, batting .125 in his last eight games to drop his average to .146. He's gone hitless in five career at-bats against Fister. Mike Minor has been outstanding in the early going, allowing a total of five runs and permitting five hits in each of his four starts. He had his worst outing last time out, giving up three runs on five hits in six innings of a 4-3 win at Colorado. Minor has struck out 21 and walked only three in 25 innings. He has surrendered more than three runs only once in his last 19 starts, dating back to last season. Minor has never faced Detroit, but Infante is 4-for-12 and Prince Fielder 3-for-3 against him.
Returning home has been a boost for the Tigers, who have outscored the Braves 17-4 in the first two games to halt a slide that had seem them drop five of six entering the series. Jhonny Peralta and Omar Infante each smacked two-run homers and Detroit roughed up Kris Medlen, who allowed a career-high 10 hits. Infante, who played three seasons with Atlanta (2008-10), had three hits Saturday and is 10-for-21 during a five-game hitting streak. Miguel Cabrera is batting .413 with a homer and 12 RBIs during an 11-game hitting streak. Getting the ball for Detroit tonight will be Doug Fister. Fister has also come out of the gate strong, winning his first three starts before taking a no-decision last time out at the Los Angeles Angels. He went seven innings and allowed three runs on five hits in that one. Fister has given up only six earned runs and has pitched at least seven innings in three of his four starts. The 6-8 Fister will be facing the Braves for the first time. Slumping B.J. Upton is 0-for-5 with a pair of walks against him in seven plate appearances.
Pick: Im going to go with the A's to get one back here. Oakland has been struggling, but I feel they have a solid pitching edge on the mound for this one. AJ Griffin has 4 starts on the year and his ERA 4.50, but that has been skewed by his last start at Boston, in which he allowed 7 ER's in 4 Innings. In his first 3 starts this year AJ went 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA and he is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in 2 home starts this year. In his career AJ is 9-2 with a 3.38 ERA verall, including a perfect 4-0 mark with a 3.17 ERA in 10 starts in this park. Chris Tillman comes in with an 0-1 mark and a 5.23 ERA in 4 starts this year. In his career Chris is just 16-19 with a 4.76 ERA in 55 starts, while in 29 career road starts he is 8-11 with a 4.66 ERA. Let's also note that Chris is a slow starter, going 2-7 with a 5.49 ERA in 19 starts from March to June. The Orioles do have the better offense, but the A's have shown they have some pop as well and behind the edge they have on the mound they should come up with a big win in this one. KEY TRENDS--- The A's are 15-3 in Griffin's last 18 starts overall and 9-1 in his 10 career regular season home starts.
