College Basketball Picks: Oklahoma Sooners at Texas Longhorns

An old rivalry continues tonight in the Big 12 as the Oklahoma Sooners travel to take on the Texas Longhorns. The game is scheduled for a 9:00 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN2. Currently the odds for the game have Oklahoma favored by 3 points.

Hard to believe what has happened to the Texas basketball program this season, but hard times are part of the college athletic scene. The Longhorns have just four Big 12 wins on the season and sport an overall record of 12-15. They did beat North Carolina by 19 back in December but have not been able to catch their feet from sliding underneath them. Oklahoma is fourth in the conference and has an 18-8 record overall, which solidifies them as a pretty good NCAA Tournament team.

Myck Kabongo has come back from whatever problems he had and he's been able to lead the team in scoring. Certainly Texas would have been a much better team throughout the entire season had he been eligible, but that's all water under the bridge at this point. Sheldon McClellan has been an OK second-type option player for the Longhorns, who are three games under .500 and are just terrible offensively.

In the first game in this series, played at Oklahoma, the Sooners won a close battle by six points. Romero Osby had a huge game with 29 points in that one, out-dueling McClellan's 25 points.

The Longhorns don't shoot the ball well at 41 percent and their 64 points per game on average is good for 258th in the country.

Oklahoma has won four of their last five games and is looking to even their record on the road at 5-5 with a win in tonight's game. They're better offensively (just a bit) at 70 points per game and they shoot just close to 44 percent. But outside of Osby Amath M'Baye gives them a big group inside to battle on the boards.

Texas, at home, is 10-4 overall. They're certainly going to be a tough one to beat in a conference rivalry game for the Sooners. But Oklahoma is overall the better team and they need this win to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive. We'll take the team that needs to get it done tonight.
