College Basketball North Carolina State Wolfpack at Virginia Cavaliers Odds, Free Pick

Hi-res-141969825_crop_exact

It’s Super Tuesday and we will see the North Carolina State Wolfpack travel to Charlottesville, Virginia  to take on the Virginia Cavaliers. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 pm (Eastern) start time and will be televised on ESPN. Currently the odds for the game have Virginia favored by 4 points while the total sits at 126.  Check out Sportsbook Spy to see who the Public is taking on all of today's games.

Analysis: In its victory over North Carolina last weekend, No. 19 North Carolina State often found little resistance and seemingly scored at will.  North Carolina State was dominant for long stretches in Saturday’s 91-83 victory over the Tar Heels, leading by as many as 28 while also snapping a 13-game losing streak to its  in-state rival. Although the team leads the conference and is sixth among Division I schools in scoring offense, it is second to last in the ACC on the other end of the court, allowing 70.2 points per game. Three players (Richard Howell, C.J. Leslie and Lorenzo Brown) all turned in double-doubles against North Carolina and played a key role in the Wolfpack’s 39-19 advantage in fast-break points, including 20-0 in the first half. North Carolina State converted a season-high 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from the 3-point line against the Tar Heels – the fourth time it has connected on at least half of its attempts beyond the arc. The inconsistent play will most likely not last too long for the Wolfpack due to their unbelievable scoring depth. C.J. Leslie, Lorenzo Brown, Richard Howell, Scott Wood, and T.J. Warren are all carrying double-digit scoring averages into this one, while Rodney Purvis is sitting at 9.8 ppg. Brown (20 points, 11 assists), Howell (16 points, 14 rebounds), and Leslie (17 points, 10 rebounds) all notched double-doubles to push NC State past UNC.

Tony Bennett's Cavaliers collected their third win in a row with a 65-51 victory over Boston College on Saturday. The decision pushed Virginia to 14-5 overall, including its 4-2 mark in ACC action. It will try to carry on that momentum on Tuesday at JPJA, where it is 12-1 on the season. The Wolfpack – the sixth-highest scoring team in the country – will likely be forced to play a much slower pace against the Cavaliers, who own the nation’s second-best scoring defense, allowing just 51.1 ppg. Since dropping consecutive road games against Wake Forest and Clemson, the Cavaliers have found their stride offensively. During the winning streak, Virginia is shooting 52.1 percent from the floor after a 38.8 percent effort during its 1-2 start in conference play. Incidentally, those numbers fall right in line with what the team has done this season – the Cavaliers are 12-0 when they shoot better than 41 percent from the field and 2-5 when they do not. Despite leading scorer Joe Harris’ struggles Saturday against Boston College (seven points), Virginia managed to shoot 77.3 percent in the second half – its best performance in a half since 1984.  The Cavaliers have held 16 opponents – including all six ACC foes – to less than 60 points and allowed no more than 64 points in any game.

Free Pick: Despite the fact that the Wolfpack is off a huge win and will be taking on the 2nd best defense in the nation I still see a NC State win here. I expect the Pack to come out fully focused here, especially after nearly losing their last road game vs Wake Forest. The Pack are 6th in the nation in scoring and I feel they will speed this game up enough to get the Cavs out of their game. Yes  Virginia’s defense I tough, but I don’t feel that their offense is good enough to put up enough points to win this one. Look for NC State to come up with another big win.
