The Denver Broncos will attempt to lock up a first round bye and, potentially, home field advantage throughout the AFC Playoffs later this afternoon when they host the Kansas City Chiefs. When these two longtime adversaries hooked up at Arrowhead in late November the Chiefs managed all of 13 first downs and 264 total yards, but they somehow held the ball for nearly 32 minutes. By winning the time of possession battle Kansas City managed to hold Peyton Manning and company to a season low 17 points.
The odds makers are, obviously, expecting more fireworks from Denver’s offense today with the spread sitting at 16.5 points. Those sentiments are not out of line considering the Broncos handiwork at Mile High this season.
Denver, which is 6-1 at home, has scored fewer than 30 points just one time at Sports Authority Field all season while the Chiefs have given up an average of 27 points per game on the road.
The Broncos also have every incentive to come out and bury a KC team that will likely see its head coach and general manager dismissed by next weekend. Denver, a winner of 10 straight, can still secure a first round bye should it win and either Houston or New England loses.
As far as Kansas City’s incentive, well, they have none. The Chiefs, who will probably end up with the first pick in April’s draft, could be playing for Romeo Crennel’s job, but his employment has been at stake for a number of weeks because they have not produced the results on the field.
Free Pick: Take the Broncos -16.5. Everything about this line says jump on Kansas City, but the Chiefs are just impossible to back in almost every situation.
