Big Ten Football Saturday Penn State at Purdue: Start Time, Odds, Free Pick

Big Ten Football on Saturday will see the Penn State Nittany Lions travel to take on the Purdue Boilermakers in college football action. The game is scheduled for a 3:30 pm start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPNU. Currently the odds for the game have Penn State favored by a field goal.

In today's game between Penn State and Purdue, we have two teams going in opposite directions. Penn State struggled to find a way at the beginning of the season, battling turmoil and just about everything else. Yet, here they are a few weeks later sitting at 5-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Everyone knows they can't go to a bowl game because of sanctions from the NCAA, but Penn State is lucky they didn't get the death penalty for all the crazy things that went on there. So, instead of qualifying for a bowl game, the Nittany Lions are using the entire season as one to make an impact.

Purdue, on the other hand, was hot early. They opened with a 3-1 record to start the season and even pushed Notre Dame to the brink. Yet, since they they've been whacked by three Big Ten clubs and lost in overtime to Ohio State on the road. For whatever reason, the Boilers haven't been able to put it together during conference play at all. It starts with quarterback play and they need to figure out which one they want to play and stick with him.

Penn State has won five straight in this series, but the visiting team has covered the number in four straight games. I guess that bodes well for the Nittany Lions. Penn State has not allowed an offensive touchdown in 13 of their last 15 quarters against Purdue, often playing tough defense. Danny Hope has to be concerned for his job because people in Purdue land were talking Rose Bowl just a few weeks ago, but now have to battle to stay out of the basement in the Leaders Division of the Big Ten.

The Boilermakers past four opponents (coincidentally games they all lost) scored an average of more than 38 points in those games — two of which were at home. Now Purdue is coming off back-to-back road losses and without a win today, could be in jeopardy of having a losing season. An FYI, in conference play Purdue is averaging 138 yards per game less than they were during their three wins.

The Lions sit at +8 in the turnover department while Purdue is +1, but the Boilers do have good special teams. Today, however, we like Penn State and QB Matt McGloin to take charge and lead his team to a road win. If Penn State doesn't turn it over, they're going to win.

Free Pick: Penn State 24, Purdue 17
