The SEC will see the 20th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies travel to take on the Auburn Tigers in a nightly showdown. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPNU. Currently the odds on the game have the Aggies favored by two touchdowns.
What has happened to Auburn? The Tigers are just a few seasons removed from the national championship and now everyone is talking about firing Gene Chizik. Auburn has stumbled mightily, falling to 1-6 overall and they're 0-5 in the SEC this season.
In fact, Auburn is only three points away from being winless on the year. Had they not won by a field goal in overtime over Louisiana-Monroe, the Tigers would be sitting at 0-7 on the season. And even though they are in the SEC, it's not as if they are playing the best teams in the country. Auburn has lost games to Clemson, Mississippi State, LSU, Arkansas, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. This is the worst start for Auburn since 1952. Chizik has a national championship to his name, but without Cam Newton under center, Chizik is just 22-35 in his career.
Texas A&M joined the SEC this season and many expected them to struggle in the new conference. They've only played two conference games to date and they've gone 2-2 in those games. Those are their only losses on the season as well and they aren't exactly "bad" losses. Only Florida, ranked second in the country, and LSU, ranked sixth, have beaten the Aggies this season.
The last meeting between these schools came in the 1986 Cotton Bowl and Texas A&M has won both games all time against Auburn.
Redshirt freshman Johnny Manziel has taken the Aggie world by storm. However, he laid an egg last week at home against LSU with five turnovers. It was the seventh time in the last two seasons that the Aggies had blown a double digit lead, which leads the country.
Last week the Aggies scored only 19 points, which broke their four game streak of averaging 53 points per game. The Tigers haven't won a game in regulation yet this season and have dropped four straight games overall. They average the third-fewest yards in the country at just 277 yards per game and are currently tied for third-fewest points in the country on average at only 15.7 points per game.
All six of Auburn's losses have come against Top 20 teams.
It seems like a lot of points, especially on the road, but we just can't back an Auburn team right now that just doesn't know what they are doing. They can score points, they can't play defense and that in turn means they can't win.
