The disappointing Cal Golden Bears will host the surprising Arizona State Sun Devils today as they look to put their 1-3 start in the rearview mirror (4:00pm ET start time, FX Network). Arizona State vs California Odds are anticipated a Bears victory but the 1.5 point line suggests this college football conference tilt could be a nail-biter. The game total in this Pac-12 North versus South match up is set at 54 points.
Some had high hopes for Cal this season, despite last year’s modest 7-6 finish, but it has dashed most expectations thanks to a 1-3 start. The Bears stumbled out of the gate with a surprising 24-31 home loss to Nevada and they suffered road losses at Ohio State (28-35) and USC (27-9) after a week two 50-31 victory against Southern Utah.
Conversely, Arizona State was viewed as a team that could struggle given the change at head coach and the loss of 13 starters, including quarterback Brock Osweiler. The Sun Devils have defied the rebuilding label thus far, jumping out to a 3-1 with wins over Northern Arizona, Illinois, and Utah.
The Sun Devils lone loss cam on the road at Missouri, but they nearly rallied past Gary Pinkel’s squad, outscoring the Tigers 13-7 in the second half of the 24-20 setback.
Recent history would indicate Arizona State might have to do some more rallying this weekend if it hopes to advance to 4-1. The Golden Bears have owned this series of late, taking eight of the last nine overall and the last five at Berkeley.
Free Pick: Take Cal -1.5. As mentioned, Cal has won the last five as a host in this series, but it also covered the number of each occasion. ASU may own the better record, but Cal has played a far more difficult schedule as its three FBS opponents are a combined 10-2 on the season.
Arizona State vs California A&M Odds:
Arizona State Sun Devils +1.5 (-110), Over 54 (-110)
California Golden Bears -1.5 (-110), Under 54 (-110)
