Free Analysis: The 79-51 Washington Nationals walloped the 71-60 St. Louis Cardinals 8-1 to begin a four-game set in Washington D.C. Thursday. St. Louis, which has been outscored 22-1 during its three-game losing streak, saw shortstop Rafael Furcal exit the contest with an elbow injury. Furcal is slated for an MRI on Friday. Adam Wainwright (13-10, 3.63 ERA) gets the ball tonight for St. Louis and he looks to extend the longest winning streak of his career. He's 6-0 with a 1.80 ERA in his last seven starts, emerging victorious in each of his last five. Wainwright collected his sixth straight victory on Sunday after working 5 2/3 solid innings in a 8-2 triumph over Cincinnati. Wainwright, who celebrated his 31st birthday on Thursday, has yielded just one homer in his last eight starts and he is 3-2 in his career versus the Nationals, but has yet to face them this season. National League East-leading Washington posted its second win following a five-game skid to move 5 1/2 games ahead of Atlanta. Rookie Bryce Harper belted his third homer in two games and Jayson Werth also went deep as the Nationals cruised in Thursday's series opener. Werth has been thriving since coming off the disabled list on Aug. 2. Werth, who is 31-for-92 (.337) with a homer and 10 RBIs, is just 2-for-11 in his career versus Wainwright. Opposing Adam tonight will be Gio Gonzalez (16-7, 3.28 ERA), who is among the contenders for the NL Cy Young Award, ranking among the league leaders in wins and strikeouts (168) while yielding just eight homers. The left-hander, who has already matched his career high in victories from last year with Oakland, is part of a Nationals rotation that leads the NL with a 3.27 ERA and a .236 opponents' average. With a victory on Friday, Gonzalez will tie Cincinnati's Johnny Cueto for the most wins in the majors. Washington manager Davey Johnson admitted that he spoke to Stephen Strasburg (15-6, 3.05 ERA) about the right-hander's innings limit following Wednesday's game versus Miami. According to Johnson, Strasburg is down to "probably ... two or three" starts.
Free Pick: I like the Nationals in this game. Gio Gonzalez has been excellent for them this year, going 16-7 with a 3.28 ERA overall and 6-4 with a 3.14 ERA at home. He has really pitched well at night, posting a n 11-4 mark with a 2.74 ERA. Gio will be taking on a St Louis team that has scored just 1 run in their last 3 games and they may be without Furcal for this one as well. The Washington offense had a slump, but they come in scoring 8 runs in each of their last 2 games and Harper is hot with 3 HR's in his last 2 games. Washington will take on Adam Wainright, who has allowed 2 ER's or less in his last 8 starts and has won his last 6 starts, but I really don't see the Cards getting enough runs off of Gonzalez to win this one.
