The Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers will conjure up memories of Super Bowl I (tongue firmly in cheek) when they meet at Lambeau Field for tonight’s preseason finale (7:00pm ET start time, NFL Network). The Chiefs were a sexy off-season pick to possibly surprise in the AFC West this year; however, after three weeks of preseason action, some are beginning to doubt the team’s chances at regaining the division title it won in 2010.
Kansas City opened well enough, thumping Arizona 27-17 at Arrowhead Stadium, but it followed up that victory with a 31-17 loss at St. Louis and a 44-14 setback against the Seahawks and rookie signal caller Russell Wilson.
Most disconcerting for Chiefs backers was the performance of their defense, which was supposed to be the team’s strength. The Rams first team offense ran roughshod over Romeo Crennel’s crew, scoring on its first two drives of the game. Seattle did even more damage as the aforementioned Wilson repeatedly targeted whoever reserve corner back Jalil Brown was supposed to be covering. With Wilson at the controls the Seahawks scored on all five of their first half possessions.
Kansas City’s ugly showing prompted Crennel to suggest his starters would play as long as needed against Green Bay this evening. Should Crennel follow through on those thoughts, it would be an unusual step, indeed. Most coaches elect to play their first teamers only one or, perhaps, two series in the final preseason game in order to keep them fresh for the season opener.
The Chiefs starters may welcome the opportunity to purge last week’s tussle with the Seahawks from their collective memory, though. And, despite KC’s lackluster preseason history, it should show a little better tonight if the first unit sees extensive action against what is certain to be the Packers second and third team units.
