The NFL Preseason ends for the Carolina Panthers and the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 pm EST start time and it will be televised locally in both markets. Currently the odds for the game have the Steelers favored by 3.5 points.
This game should be an interesting one as the Panthers and Steelers are fun teams to watch. The Panthers are one of the more up and coming teams in the league with potential superstar Cam Newton at quarterback. The Panthers have earned a 2-1 record in the Preseason and have won their last two games overall. They dropped their opening game to the Houston Texans but did rebound to beat the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets in back to back weeks. The Jets obviously aren't any good, having been the only team in the preseason that still doesn't have a touchdown yet. Take with that what you will, but the Panthers did look pretty good in that game overall.
The Steelers have won several Super Bowls during the past 10 years or so and are one of the best teams overall in the league. They have also gotten out to a 2-1 record overall this preseason and have also won their last two games overall. Pittsburgh topped the Indianapolis Colts in a close game by a late field goal and then blew out the Buffalo Bills 38-7 last week. Ben Roethlisberger hasn't been great but he hasn't been terrible either. Pittsburgh is getting older and older as a team and although they've been great in year's past, this is just another season that adds to the already old Pittsburgh squad. I'm not saying they are going to be average or struggle, but it is interesting to note that some of the better teams in the league the past few years (New England included) are not getting up their in age.
In tonight's contest we get to see one of the most electrifying quarterbacks in Newton against a crazy great defense in the Steelers. It's obviously not a regular season game where everyone will play all four quarters, but there still should be several drives between the QB and that vaunted defense. It should be a lot of fun to watch regardless. NFL Preseason games usually are once we get to this point.
We think the Steelers can win this game tonight at home and they probably will. We really like Newton this season to continue to be a good quarterback, but it will be interesting to see how the rest of the Panthers adjust to his skills. The Steelers get the win tonight in a higher scoring affair, 28-24.
