San Diego Chargers 2012 NFL Preview: Schedule, Spreads, Odds

Hi-res-107812931_crop_exact

For many years the San Diego Chargers were the favorites to go to the Super Bowl and for all of those years the Chargers disappointed by not making it happen. The last two seasons the Chargers have hardly been themselves and haven’t been to the playoffs and while they seemed to be transitioning out of the LaDanian Tomlinson era, there were many other stars like Darren Sproles and Vincent Jackson who are also gone. The Chargers still have talent on the roster but the AFC West hasn’t gotten any easier. BetOnline has the San Diego Chargers listed at +1200 odds ($100 to win $1200) to win the AFC Championship and +185 odds ($100 to win $185) to take AFC West Title. The latest Super Bowl Odds for the Chargers are +2200 ($100 to win $2200).

Despite missing the playoffs the last two, with a plethora of talent, the Chargers have decided to keep the services of Norv Turner, but another non-playoff season should have him on the unemployment line come January. Last year the Chargers got of to a fast start, which is odd for them, but a midseason swoon that saw them lose 7 games in a row really sealed their fate. Under Turner the Chargers are 12-13 in the first 5 weeks of the year, but have always finished strong, going 21-4 during the last 5 weeks of the year.

The Chargers were #1 in offense and defense in 2010, but ended up going just 9-7, while last year they were #6 in offense and #16 in defense and finished 8-8. This year they really bolstered their defense by using their first 3 draft choices on that side of the ball. In 2010 they were second in thew league in sack, but last year they dipped to 23rd. The Chargers have really helped their pass rush by drafting LB Melvin Ingram from South Carolina. Last year the Chargers had a very potent offense once again and they did it without having Jackson around for much of the year. This year they lose Jackson, but have brought in solid receivers in Robert Meachem and Eddie Royal. Rivers in one of the better QB's in the league and the running game is decent, but the OL is a mess and depth is a concern there. San Diego had a very nice draft, their schedule is average at best and if they stay healthy (53 starts lost to injury last year) then they just might have a shot at taking away the AFC West crown from the media hyped Broncos.

The Over Under on games won is 9 for San Diego and at Sportsbook.ag it is 9 Under (-125). Vegas based Cantor Gaming has released pointspreads for weeks 1 through 16 and they see it differently for San Diego, as the Chargers are favored in 10 of their games, with one pick.
