MLB Monday Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox Preview, Odds, Start Time, Free Pick

One of the biggest games on Monday night in Major League Baseball is the Detroit Tigers traveling to take on the Boston Red Sox. The game is scheduled for a 7:10 p.m. EST start time and it will be televised nationally on MLB.tv in addition to local coverage. Currently the odds have the Red Sox favored with the total at 9.5 runs for the contest.

Free Preview: The Boston Red Sox will be looking for their first three-game winning streak in nearly six weeks tonight in this contest. The Tigers are a game and a half out of first place in the American League Central, having lost control of the division in the middle of this road stand, where they have struggled. Detroit has also lost seven of eight games at Fenway Park. The Tigers will have 10-game winner Max Scherzer (10-5, 4.49 ERA) on the mound for the game. Scherzer has thrown well lately, going 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA over his last seven starts and winning his fourth consecutive decision Wednesday. Clay Buchholz (8-3, 4.93) will start for Boston and has only given up one run in each of the last two starts. Jhonny Peralta hit a pair of home runs in the Tigers win over the Blue Jays on Sunday, salvaging one game in that series against Toronto. The shortstop was 0 for 17 over his previous five games. Detroit beat Buchholz and the Red Sox way back at the beginning of the season in April, 13-12. While they didn't hit a home run in the game, they did score seven runs in four innings. Scherzer was 0-2 with an 11.81 over his previous four matchups with Boston prior to a May start this year that saw him surrender just three runs overall. Current Red Sox have had their way with Scherzer, though, allowing them to hit .344 in 93 plate appearances and allowing five home runs. Buchholz has fared better against Detroit, allowing a .246 average in more than 110 at bats.

Free Pick: Both teams won on Sunday and this show tonight should be a pretty good pitching matchup with Buchholz and Scherzer. Both have had pretty decent records to this point in the year, but still have inflated ERAs. Detroit has struggled on the road this season, sitting at just 26-27 to that point this season. However, the Red Sox haven't exactly taken advantage of their home park either, sitting three games under the .500 mark at 25-28. Which seems worse? Probably Boston. Scherzer has pitched very well in his last five starts, so we lean to the Tigers in this one tonight.
