The Washington Nationals are in first place and currently are tied for the most wins in the National League. Thursday night they will take on the Milwaukee Brewers in a National League clash. The game is scheduled for an 8:10 p.m. EST start time and it will be televised nationally on MLB.tv and locally. Currently the odds have the Brewers favored at -122 for the game.
Free Preview: The Nats have surprised everyone around Major League Baseball with their excellent play thus far in the season. Not many considered the Nationals to be a legitimate team even after they had a pretty hot start overall. Most, if not all, believed Washington would come back down to earth and settle in as a mediocre club that had a lot of youth, but also some gritty veterans. However, the team has embraced their roles and now have continued to play well. Yes, the Nationals are in first place overall in the National League East. Tonight they have a tough task, taking on Yovani Gallardo (8-7, 3.72 ERA) and the Brewers, as they try to avoid their first seven-game skid since April 30-May 6, 2011. The home team has won the last nine games between these clubs. The Nationals will have Edwin Jackson (5-6, 3.73) on the mound and will be looking to gain the first win in the opening game of this weekend series. Jackson has struggled recently with a 10.54 ERA in his previous three outings prior to a decent start in his last outing. Danny Espinosa is batting .432 (19 for 44) during an 11-game hitting streak, and his only hit in five at-bats against Gallardo is a home run. Ryan Braun, 3 for 12 with two doubles off Jackson, hit .440 (11 for 25) with his NL-leading 27th and 28th homers on the trip. Braun was 8 for 21 versus Washington last season.Brewers right fielder Corey Hart hit four homers in the Nationals' last visit, including a career-high three to back Gallardo in an 11-3 victory May 23, 2011.
Free Pick: Nationals are hot, winners of five straight and seven of 10 overall. Even though Jackson has really struggled in his last three or four appearances, we still really like Washington on the road. The Nationals have won 30 of their 50 road games to date this season and I think they can capitalize on the struggled of the Brewers, who have been marred recently with a lot of trade rumors. Overall the Brewers seem to have fallen on hard times this season, and I think that will continue tonight as we are backing the Nationals, who are red hot at a really good time in their schedule
