MLB Thursday features the usual slate of get-away action, but only one nationally televised contest as the Red Sox host the White Sox in an MLB Network evening showcase. Start time in tonight’s series finale between Chicago and Boston at the legendary Fenway Park is set for 7:10pm ET. The latest MLB Odds have the Red Sox listed as a -139 moneyline favorite ($130 to win $100) while the White Sox are drawing +129 odds to even the four game set at two games apiece. This evening’s game total is set at 10.5 runs; the Under is favored at -115 odds.
Boston went into the All-Star break on a 1-6 run, but the annual respite apparently did Bobby Valentine’s squad well. The Red Sox are 4-2 since the Mid-Summer Classic and they have an opportunity to win their second consecutive series tonight as they battle the White Sox at Fenway.
Boston won the first game of the series 5-1 and it took a 2-1 lead last night with a 10-1 blowout. The Red Sox cranked out 14 hits, but Cody Ross and Adrian Gonzalez did most of the heavy lifting, combining for six hits, three of which were home runs, and 10 RBI.
Boston can only hope for a similar offensive effort tonight with White Sox lefty Jose Quintana toeing the rubber. Quintana has compiled some impressive numbers this season, a 2.60 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 11 appearances (nine starts), but two of his last three outings were cringe worthy. The 23 year old rookie got lit up for eight hits and five earned runs over five innings in a 9-8 win at Kansas City on July 13th. He had a similar showing opposite the Yankees on June 29th, yielding eight hits and six earned runs over six innings in a 14-7 win over New York.
The Red Sox will counter Quintana with the recently returned Clay Buchholz. Buchholz, like most of Boston’s starters, has endured an up and down season, a fact reflected in his 5.54 ERA and 1.48 WHIP. Buchholz appeared to be in a groove in late May and early June, though, earning four consecutive quality starts in a 15 day period.
That streak ended on June 19th with a six inning, five earned run effort against the Marlins. Buchholz landed in the hospital and on the DL with an intestinal issue following that appearance; he returned to the mound last week, but the results were not good. The Texas native took the loss at Tampa Bay after allowing four earned runs over 6.1 innings.
If Buchholz’ past history against the White Sox is any indication, he may be in for another rough outing tonight. In four career starts against Chicago, Buchholz has produced a 6.53 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, and .298 batting average against. That may not affect Boston’s chances at victory, though. Buchholz owns a 5.40 ERA in eight starts at Fenway where he has allowed 11 home runs and 20 free passes in 51.2 innings pitched this season, yet, the Red Sox are 5-3 in those games.
MLB Thursday Betting Trend: The White Sox are 1-9 in their last 10 games as a road dog versus an AL East opponent with a game total between 10.5 and 11 runs.
