Lee Westwood’s quest for a major championship continues this week as he tests his wears at the Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Course, host site for the 2012 British Open. Westwood, one of the European Tour’s premiere players, is considered by many, including the odds makers at TheGreek.com, as one of the favorites to win this weekend’s event. The offshore book has Westwood listed at +1415 moneyline odds ($100 to win $1415) to capture the 2012 Open Championship. The Worksop, England native is also favored to finish ahead of fellow top five golfers Rory McIlory and Luke Donald at -145 and -125 odds, respectively.
Lee Westwood will participate in his 18th Open Championship this week, and during the course of those appearances he has done just about everything but win the event. Westwood has five missed cuts at the British Open; however, he also owns three top five Open finishes, including a personal best second place result in 2010.
The 39 year old Westwood shot a nine under par 279 at St. Andrews that year, but still finished seven shots back of surprise winner Louis Oosthuizen.
Westwood, a top 10 finisher in eight of the last 11 major tournaments he has entered, comes into this week’s Open sitting third in the Official World Golf Rankings and fourth in the European Tour’s Race to Dubai standings. He has one victory this year, the Norde Masters, and seven top 10 results, including the Masters (third place) and U.S. Open (10th place), in 14 tournaments played.
While Westwood has yet to capture a Claret Jug, or any other major championship trophy, most golf insiders believe it is just a matter of time before he crosses ‘win a major’ off his to-do list. Given that belief, as well as Westwood’s penchant for finding a spot near the top of the leaderboard, he looks more than appealing at +1415 odds.
