With the second half of the MLB Season scheduled to get underway on this Friday, July 13th, offshore odds maker TheGreek has updated its 2012 American League Cy Young Odds. The new favorite to win the coveted award is Angels hurler Jered Weaver. Weaver is presently listed at 5-4 odds to garner his first Cy Young trophy. Last year’s AL Cy Young winner, Justin Verlander, is a second pick at 5-2 odds while the White Sox Chris Sale is drawing 5-1 odds as a third choice.
The Favorites
Jered Weaver (+125): Weaver was nothing short of brilliant in the season’s first half, posting a 10-1 record (Angels 12-3 in his 15 appearances) to go along with a 1.96 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in 15 starts. As dominant as Weaver’s overall first half numbers were, his production at home was otherworldly. Weaver tallied a 6-0 record at Angels Stadium where his ERA was a microscopic 0.58 and opponents hit him at a .131 clip.
Justin Verlander (+250): While the Tigers ace turned in a hideous performance at the All-Star Game in Kansas City, his first half was typical Verlander. The defending AL MVP cruised to a 9-5 record in 18 starts while his 128 strikeouts, 2.58 ERA, and 0.95 WHIP were first, fourth, and second best, respectively, in the American League.
Chris Sale (+500): Sale, in his first season as a full-time starter, has been a revelation for White Sox Skipper Robin Ventura. The lanky southpaw owns a 10-2 record, 2.19 ERA, and 0.95 WHIP at the break. Given his strong start, Sale figures to finish the season with some impressive totals; however, he may be a candidate for some second half fatigue.
