UFC 148, perhaps the most anticipated event in mixed martial arts history, ended as one might expect; with champion Anderson Silva retaining his middleweight belt. UFC 148 results saw Silva defeat top ranked challenger Chael Sonnen via a second round TKO while Forrest Griffin retired former light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz with a unanimous decision victory in the co-main event. Payouts for the two top billed matchups brought Silva backers a $100 return for every $290 wagered; Griffin’s win resulted in a $100 return for every $370 spent on the Ultimate Fighter season one winner.

Chael Sonnen talked another big game in the lead up to his second meeting with Anderson Silva, but, once again, he failed to deliver on a host of promises, foremost of which was his declaration that the middleweight belt would belong to him at night’s end.

Sonnen started strong as the first round resembled much of their last scrap. The former Oregon wrestler took Silva down early and smothered him with a relentless ground attack. The champion weathered the early storm, though, and kept the fight standing in the second round.

After two failed take down attempts early in the second frame, Sonnen attacked Silva with a spinning back fist, but he missed badly, landing awkwardly against the cage before falling to the canvas. Strangely, Sonnen never attempted to get up; Silva capitalized on the challenger’s inaction with a knee to the chest, which was followed by a barrage of punches to end the fight.

The win served as Silva’s 10th successful title defense, a UFC record, and it improved his record inside the Octagon to 15-0. Sonnen’s professional record fell to 28-13-1 with the loss.

UFC 148 underdog winners included main card participants Demian Maia, a +130 moneyline play against Dong Hyun Kim, and former Strikeforce title holder Cung Le (+130) as well as preliminary fighters Khabib Nurmagomedov (+170) and Rafaello Oliveira (+160).
