Much is at stake tomorrow morning when Roger Federer and Andy Murray square off in the 2012 Wimbledon Men’s Final. The event, which has a scheduled start time of 9:00am ET on ESPN, will feature Federer’s quest to secure a record tying seventh Wimbledon championship as well as Murray’s bid to end England’s 76 year Wimbledon drought. Roger Federer vs. Andy Murray Odds and Picks at BetOnline.ag have Federer, who can also regain the ATP’s top ranking with a win over Murray, listed as a -205 moneyline favorite ($205 to win $100). Murray is a 7/4 underdog to win the match ($100 to win $175); however, he is heavily favored, at -315 odds, to finish within 2.5 sets of Federer.
It is not the Wimbledon final many envisioned; however, few are complaining about tomorrow’s potentially historic meeting between Roger Federer and Andy Murray. Federer, a longtime Wimbledon favorite, will enjoy favored status among the odds makers, but Murray’s Scottish heritage guarantees him golden boy status with the crowd.
Whether or not Murray can make good use of the home court advantage remains to be seen. His tournament has been anything but easy as four of his six matches required four sets. Murray’s semifinal meeting with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga proved to be a less arduous contest than his quarterfinals showdown with David Ferrer, though. Murray, after winning the first two frames 6-3, 6-4, still needed a fourth set thanks to a 3-6 collapse in the third.
Murray can ill afford any sort of letdown against Federer, who handled Novak Djokovic with relative ease. Federer, who won his 27th career meeting with Djokovic 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, hit 12 aces and 31 winners while committing just 10 unforced errors against the top ranked Serbian.
Federer and Murray, who have never faced each other on anything other than a hard court surface, are meeting for the 15th time in their careers. Murray, the ATP’s fourth ranked men’s singles player, surprisingly, holds an 8-7 advantage over Federer in those matches. However, Fed has won five of their last seven encounters, including the last two, a 2010 showdown at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London and a March battle at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship in the United Arab Emirates.
Should Federer win tomorrow, it would mark his 17th grand slam title and his seventh Wimbledon title. The Swiss great has not won a major since capturing his fourth Australian Open championship in January of 2010 with straight sets victory against Murray. A win for Murray would represent the first grand slam title of his career.
