Now he will face France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in a 2012 Wimbledon semifinals match that has a scheduled start time of 10:30am ET tomorrow morning. Andy Murray, who reached the Wimbledon semifinals for a fourth straight year with yesterday’s victory, had a shaky start in his match with Spain’s David Ferrer. Ferrer, the ATP’s fifth ranked player, won the first set 7-6 (7-5) and he nearly captured the second set, falling 6-7 (8-6). Murray, who countered 39 unforced errors with 61 winners and 18 aces, stole the momentum from that point, taking the last two frames 6-4, 7-6 (6-4).
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who holds the sixth spot in the ATP men’s singles rankings, also found himself in a heated quarterfinals battle as he too needed four sets to escape Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber. Tsonga prevailed 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 to earn his second consecutive Wimbledon semifinals appearance.
Tomorrow will mark the seventh career meeting between Murray and Tsonga and their second showdown at the All England Club. The pair met in the 2012 Wimbledon quarterfinals with Murray topping Tsonga 6-7, 7-6, 6-2, 6-2. They last squared off in June of 2011 at the AEGON Championships in London, England. Murray won the grass court match 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 to improve his career record to 5-1 against Tsonga.
