The 2012 Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest will take place on Wednesday, July 4 in the United States. The event is an annual American competitive-eating competition. The competition is held at Nathan's Famous Corporation's original location, and best-known restaurant at the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues in Coney Island, in Brooklyn. The 2012 Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest start time is set for a noon start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN3. Typically the contest is held live on ESPN, but this year it will be on tape delay.
The pre-show begins at 10 a.m. while the women's championship will get underway at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN3. The men's championship will take place at noon on ESPN3. Due to it being on tape delay, ESPN will have the contest aired on their network at 3 p.m. It will then re-air on ESPN2 at 4 p.m. as well. Last year, more than 40,000 spectators attended the event, and an additional 1.949 million viewers watched it live on ESPN television.
There's a whole mess of conflict going on in this contest, which of course wouldn't be American without some drama. Takeru Kobayashi essentially became a household name and a star, added to his subsequent rivalry with American Joey Chestnut, and the current controversy over Kobayashi's contractual dispute and absence. Only in America, it seems. Last year, the four-time-defending champion Chestnut won his fifth title overall by consuming 62 hot dogs and buns in just ten minutes. Insane.
But wait, it gets better — you can actually bet on this contest, and there's a lot to chose from as well. You can check out all of the odds and possible bet scenarios here.
