Two golf majors are in the books and the third is just around the corner with the Open Championship scheduled to get underway on Thursday, July 19th at the Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club in St. Annes, England. Despite Tiger Woods’ collapse over the final two days of the U.S. Open, he is currently the favorite to win the season’s third major. 2012 British Open Odds have Woods listed at 10-1 to win his fourth Claret Jug. Rory McIlory and Lee Westwood are second picks to win the event with each player drawing 12-1 odds to secure their first Open Championship title.
Try as he might, Tiger Woods has experienced great difficulty tempering odds maker expectations. As evidence of such, here are Woods last three British Open results: 12th, Cut, 23rd. In all fairness to both the book makers and betting public, Woods has also, his recent struggles aside, provided ample reason to suspect he might grab his 15th major championship sooner rather than later.
Yes, Woods finished 40th at the 2012 Masters and he fell back to 21st at the U.S. Open after a strong start, but he does have three top four finishes in his last eight major entries.
Rory McIlory and Lee Westwood have given books few reasons to place them ahead of Woods on the odds leaderboard, at least in regards to major championships. Westwood, who tied for 10th at the U.S. Open, has yet to win a major, despite a career littered with top five finishes at the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and PGA Championship. It stands to reason that Westwood will eventually break through; however, until he does, it seems like the guy who has won 14 should be favored ahead of him.
McIlroy does own a U.S. Open title, but he has placed 25th, 64th, 40th, and missed the cut in major play since capturing his lone major championship last June. McIlory has also faded of late, missing the cut in four of the last five tournaments he has entered.
Among the other favorites to win the 2012 Open Championship are Phil Mickelson (30-1), Luke Donald (20-1), Justin Rose (30-1), and Bubba Watson (40-1). Mickleson, who owns three major titles, is seeking his first British Open victory. Donald, the Official World Golf Ranking’s No. 1 player, is still chasing his first major championship title; his best performance at the Open Championship came in 2009 when he tied for fifth.
2012 U.S. Open winner Webb Simpson recently stated that he will not be competing at the Open Championship. Simpson’s second child is due next month.
