Washington Nationals Vs. New York Yankees 6/16/12: Mitch's Free MLB Baseball Pick

Saturday Afternoon in MLB and we will see the New York Yankees travel to the Nation's Capital to take on the Washington Nationals. The game is scheduled for a 1:05 pm start time and it will be televised live on YES (New York) and MASN (Washington). Currently the odds have the Yankees favored at -117, while the Nationals are dogs of +110. The total for the game is at 7.5 runs.

Free Analysis: New York has won 12 of 14 to take over first place in the American League East and are 8-2 in interleague play. The New York Yankees have now won seven in a row as they increased their lead in the A.L. East with their win on Friday. Curtis Granderson had two hits including a home run and Derek Jeter and Nick Swisher had two hits each as the Yankees scored seven runs on 10 hits. On the mound Phil Hughes allowed six hits and a run while striking out nine over six innings for his fifth win of the season. The Yankees pitching has been very solid of late as they have a team ERA of just 2.00 during the month of June. For Saturday’s game New York starts Andy Pettitte who has been impressive in his comeback thus far. Pettitte, who turned 40 on Friday, declared himself ready to pitch after a bullpen session on Wednesday. The left-hander was taken out of his last start in the sixth inning after taking a ball off his left hand. X-rays were negative. Andy is 3-2 on the year with a solid 2.81 ERA and he  has struck out 40 batters in 41 2/3 innings this season. Andy has made six career starts against the Washington franchise, going 3-1 with a 4.29 ERA. For the Washington Nationals they are starting to put some distance between themselves and the chasers in the N.L. East but they didn’t help their cause on Friday as they dropped game one of the series. Michael Morse and Jesus Flores had two hits each and Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman had hits as the Nationals had eight hits in all but scored two runs. On the mound starter Gio Gonzalez allowed five hits and three earned runs while striking out eight over six innings taking his third loss of the year. For Saturday’s game Washington starts Jordan Zimmerman who has had two no decisions in his last two starts. In his last start Zimmermann (3-5, 2.91 ERA) went seven innings at Boston last weekend and allowed three runs but did not factor in the decision. The 26-year old has surrendered three earned runs or less in 10 of his 12 starts. He has been bitten by the long ball lately, yielding eight home runs over his last five starts. Zimmermann has never faced New York. The Yankees are 24-9 in their last 33 vs. National League East and 40-14 in Pettittes last 54 starts as a favorite, while the Nationals are 7-1 in their last 8 interleague games.

Free Pick: I had the Under in last nights game and it looked like I my win it it till both teams scored a run in the 9th. Well I will come right back with it today. Andy Pettitte has been most impressive in his 6 starts with a 2.81 ERA. He did struggle in his lone road start this year, but still just 6 total runs were scored in that start and If he has some trouble he will be backed up by a pen that has a 2.01 ERA in it's last 10 games. He will be facing a Nats team that doesn't score well at home at just 3.7 rpg. Jordan Zimmerman  Gets the ball for the Nats and he has been solid this year, with a 2.91 ERA, while allowing 3 ER's or less in 10 of his 12 starts, plus he has the added edge of having never faced the Yanks. New York has averaged 5 rpg on the road, but they should have some p[roblems plating many runs off of Zimmerman in this one. Look for at most 6 runs here.
