Can the Detroit Red Wings join historic group?

The Red Wings are two wins away from being just the fourth team in NHL history to come back from a 3-0 deficit in the playoffs.

San Jose still leads the series, 3-2. However, the next game (tomorrow) will be played at Joe Louis Arena and Detroit has done a pretty good job of holding off elimination (4-1 with Jimmy Howard in net in those games).

With a win, the Red Wings would join the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, the 1975 New York Islanders and the 2010 Philadelphia Flyers as just the fourth team in the prestigious history of the NHL to come back from a 3-0 hole.

I'm not here to guarantee they will move on, but if you got a chance to watch last night's game I think you saw a different Detroit team in the third period than we saw for the majority of the series. Sense of urgency? Maybe a little, but this team looked focused. Crazy, being down 3-1 and in a do-or-die situation, but it almost felt like the Red Wings were the team AHEAD in the series. Not sure if anyone else caught that, but after San Jose took a 3-1 lead in the game Mike Babcock's team didn't panic at all.

GM Kenny Holland (best in the sport) said his team is planning on returning to California to play for a chance at history.

"We plan to be flying back for Game 7," Holland said Monday.

More so, I got a chance to watch the press conference (from home, boo) today with the Red Wings. Babcock was asked if his team was going to be getting back on a plane for another game in this series.

"We're getting on it," Babcock said in all seriousness.

As confident as the Red Wings are with getting a victory in tomorrow night's game, San Jose is just as worried.

Yes, I said "worried."

For one, the Sharks captain Joe Thornton isn't exactly happy.

"You try to eliminate teams when you have a chance to," he said. "So we're going to go in there and try to eliminate them. That's the game plan."

Never good when your captain has to come out and say those types of things to the media. Remember, Thornton was pretty much kicked out of Boston because he couldn't live up to the "C" of Boston lore. Don't believe me? Ask a Bruins fan. Now Thornton has found a new home and he's done a pretty good job in San Jose. The problem? If he can't hold off Detroit and the Red Wings come back and knock this team out, Thornton will never live it down — even if he does eventually win a Cup.

One of the biggest reasons I think Detroit is even alive in this series is because Patrick Marleau has essentially not shown up. He has 0 points in the series and the Red Wings have kept him at bay for the most part. He has to show up in order for San Jose to move on. I also have been very impressed with Nicklas Lidstrom's play. Whether this will be the Captain's last game in Detroit or not remains to be seen. But don't think he won't continue to play at an extremely high level. If Detroit stays out of the box and the Sharks' third line doesn't score, this series heads back to San Jose.
