Analysis: The St. Louis Cardinals continue to perform well in all aspects of the game heading into the middle of their three-game series Saturday against the host Los Angeles Dodgers. The Cardinals own the best record in baseball and seem to be getting stronger, winning 17 of their last 22 games. St. Louis, which beat Los Angeles 7-0 in Friday's series opener, has the lowest ERA in the majors (3.09), the fifth-highest batting average (.267) and third-fewest errors (17). The Cardinals have batted .291 during a 17-5 surge, but they rank near the bottom of the majors with a .221 average off left-handers. Scheduled St. Louis starter John Gast (2-0, 4.76) looks to win for the third time in as many starts in place of the injured Jake Westbrook (elbow). The left-hander has opened with five scoreless innings in each of his first two outings before giving up a total of six runs in the sixth.Gast was drafted in the fifth round by the Texas Rangers a month after undergoing Tommy John surgery following his senior year of high school in 2007. He opted to play for Florida State, where he twice pitched in the College World Series, and was eventually taken by the Cardinals in the sixth round of the 2010 draft.

Despite a $215 million payroll, Los Angeles (19-27) is last in the NL West with a big-name offense that ranks near the bottom of the majors with 3.39 runs per game. Amid rumors that Mattingly's job could be in jeopardy, Kasten gave his manager, who is in the third and final year of his contract, a vote of confidence before a 7-0 loss to the Cardinals (31-16) on Friday. The Dodgers and Cardinals have each experienced injuries to their pitching staffs this season, but Los Angeles hasn’t responded nearly as well. The middle of its lineup has also underachieved as 2011 Triple Crown contender Matt Kemp is still sitting on two home runs. Andre Ethier also continues to look very average at the plate and the Dodgers' best hitter in April - first baseman Adrian Gonzalez - has seen his average dip from .333 at the end of April to .303. Ted Lilly will get a chance to turn things around for the Dodgers when he makes his first appearance since April 29, a day before he went on the 15-day disabled list with a right rib cage strain. He takes the starting spot previously occupied by rookie right-hander Matt Magill, who was sent down to the minors after going winless in four starts with a 5.50 ERA. Lilly was limited to eight games last year after undergoing surgery to his throwing shoulder, which also caused the 37-year-old to miss the first three weeks this season. Lilly has pitched well against St. Louis in his career, however, owning a 7-3 record with a 2.66 ERA in 105 innings.

Pick: Gonna ride the hot Cardinals in this one. They are starting a rookie pitcher, but he does have an edge as an already weak Dodgers has never faced him. John is 2-0 with a 4.76 ERA in 2 starts this year for the Card, while in AAA Memphis he was 3-1 with a 1.16 ERA in 7 starts. He can pitch and should have no trouble keeping an LA offense, that has scored just 3.12 rpg at home, down. In contrast the Cards score 5.16 rpg on the road. I know they have trouble vs lefties, but they did get to Capuano last night and Ted Lilly has struggled in his two starts this year, posting an 0-1 mark, with a 5.62 ERA and a 2.25 WHIP in those two starts. The Cards are hot, while LA just seems to be playing out the string til a new coach is brought in. Look for St Louis to take another one in this series tonight.

According to Cantor the Indianapolis Clts are slated for a decent year, with their win total set at 8.5 wins (Even). Indianapolis is at +2000 Odds to win the AFC Championship and +4500 Odds to win Super Bowl XLVIII.

The season's most inspirational story began on a bluesy note. The Colts' iconic quarterback walked out, plus All-Pro tight end Dallas Clark, Pro Bowl rusher Joseph Addai and stalwart linebacker Gary Brackett had left as well. A 1-2 start -- the first loss a 20-point road blowout to the Bears in Week 1, the second a near victory at home against the Jaguars in Week 3 -- seemed a harbinger of a second straight dismal season to come. Just when things couldn't get any worse, first-year coach Chuck Pagano was diagnosed with leukemia and forced to take an immediate leave of absence.

And then, with one late lunge over the goal line against Green Bay in Week 4, the Colts turned all that hurt into a mighty wellspring of inspiration. A 30-27 victory over the Packers, one powered by Wayne's career-high 212 receiving yards and game-winning TD, announced the Colts as the worst kind of wounded animal -- a dangerous one. With offensive coordinator Bruce Arians calling the shots and Chuckstrong as a rally cry, the Colts were reborn as one of the league's best closers, posting a 9-1 record in games decided by one possession or less.

Leading the charge were rookies Andrew Luck, whose 4,374 passing yards reclaimed the NFL rookie record for Indianapolis from Cam Newton; T.Y. Hilton, who led the team in TD catches (seven) and set a franchise rookie mark for 100-yard receiving games (five); and Vick Ballard, whose 814 yards rushing was the highest by a single Colts rusher in three years. If anything, locals are more excited than ever to hear and see what the team will do for an encore.

The Colts' transition to a 3-4-based defense might have gone smoother had Pagano, a defensive mastermind by reputation with the Ravens, been well enough to oversee it. The net result was a unit that ranked 21st in scoring, 29th against the run and felled opposing passers a pitiful 32 times -- 10 of which came against Green Bay and Jacksonville, two of the league's most inviting offenses. Expect the Colts to improve behind a healthy Pagano and linebacker Pat Angerer, who was beset by a fractured right foot most of '12.

Look for optimism to run slightly higher than it did on the heels of the team's last drastic turnaround, coming off of the 1999 season. The reason being that an updated cast of "triplets" (Luck, Ballard and Hilton) will be backed up by a new and improved defense. An embattled offensive line will finally start to show some fight. The Colts will look, in other words, like a title contender. Whether perception meets reality will depend on how smoothly they make the transition from ultimate underdog to everyday frontrunner.

According to Cantor the New York Jets are slated for a rough year, with their win total set at 6.5 wins (Under -115). New York is at +6000 Odds to win the AFC Championship and +10000 Odds to win Super Bowl XLVIII.

When the Jets traded a fourth- and sixth-round pick to Denver for quarterback Tim Tebow on March 21 they went from a high-profile team with outspoken coach Rex Ryan to a media sensation. The attention created a circus-like atmosphere and made the ups and downs of an injury-prone squad seem more dramatic. But in reality, the two biggest events of the season were cornerback Darrelle Revis' ACL tear in Week 3 and receiver Santonio Holmes' Lisfranc injury in Week 4. The Jets' season hit a bottom on Thanksgiving Night when they lost 49-19 to the Patriots and America was introduced to the "butt-fumble" -- when Sanchez lost the ball after running into the backside of offensive lineman Brandon Moore.

New York has replaced its general manager and both coordinators after that 6-10 season that included three straight losses to close out the season and a feeling of disarray surrounding the franchise. Marty Mornhinweg will attempt to change the offense from its ground-and-pound philosophy to a more open, passer-friendly attack. Dennis Thurman -- the new defensive coordinator -- spent last season as the team's secondary coach. He'll be tasked with shoring up a front that was near the bottom of the league in rushing yards allowed.

The Jets need skill players in the worst way. As much as the offense became a laughing-stock, the O-line was actually one of the best in the NFL according to ProFootballFocus.com. The problem was the ineffectiveness of quarterback Mark Sanchez, running back Shonn Greene and a host of middling wide receivers.

Releasing veterans Bart Scott (linebacker), Calvin Pace (linebacker) and Jason Smith (offensive lineman) and restructuring the contracts of almost all their high-cost veterans will help the Jets chip away at their salary-cap problem. Scott won't be missed after several public gaffes -- including calling out the fans after their Thanksgiving Day loss -- and several plays where his lack of speed in coverage cost them dearly.

Typically this is when Ryan starts talking Super Bowl, but with Idzik in control and Tebow gone, a quieter version of the Jets will head to training camp. With salary-cap constraints, Idzik will take a more measured approach to team-building and the Jets won't make any more splashy signings. The Jets could enter camp with three quarterbacks having a bona fide chance to win the starting job. Sanchez will likely compete with a journeyman veteran like Moore or Chad Henne

Jets fans are going to have to buy a program in the preseason because Idzik will make several cuts as he cleans up the mess left by former general manager Mike Tannenbaum. Ryan will never admit it, but this has to be a rebuilding year.

Blog Post: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Win Total, Schedule

Cantor Gaming, arguably one of the most respected sportsbooks in Las Vegas, has released its highly anticipated NFL season win totals. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not expected to do much this year as they have been slated for 7.5 wins (Over -115). Tampa Bay is at +2500 Odds to win the NFC Championship and +6000 Odds to win Super Bowl XLVIII.

An aggressive 2012 offseason for the Buccaneers looked like it was going to pay off in spades early as a four-game winning streak in the middle of the season put Tampa Bay, at 6-4, squarely in the middle of the playoff picture. Unfortunately, a 1-5 record down the stretch took the shine off that surprisingly strong start.

Schiano couldn't really do much to fix what was ailing Josh Freeman, either. Coming off of a lackluster 2011, getting the guy once thought to be the team's franchise quarterback back in rhythm was the prime objective. But Freeman was dreadful after a five-game stretch from Weeks 6 to 10 in which he had a rating over 100, finishing the season with 17 interceptions and 10 fumbles (2 lost) and creating serious doubts about the team's future under center. This is still a very potent offense, depending on whether Josh Freeman is running hot or cold. He received a vote of confidence from Schiano at the NFL Combine, but there have to be questions about his long term viability. For now he's slinging the rock, however, and if 2010 Josh Freeman shows up, watch out. Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams are a dynamic pair of wideouts.

Defensively the Bucs are facing some problems, however. They invested four early-round picks in defensive lineman and the return on investment is currently questionable. Gerald McCoy had a monster season in 2012, but Brian Price is already out of Tampa, potential star Adrian Clayborne is coming back from an early-season ACL injury, and Da'Quan Bowerswas recently arrested at a New York airport with a firearm. As painful as it is to say, they need more help on the defensive line, especially with Michael Bennett leaving as an unrestricted free agent.The secondary was atrocious last year, so allot of work needs to be done there.

The Buccaneers could take another step forward, but things have to break right again. They need to work free agency and the draft the way they did in 2012 and Freeman needs to become more consistent. If that happens and they don't suffer a rash of injuries, Tampa Bay could make some noise this year.

Pick: I expect the Buccaneers to possibly fall short of 7.5 wins. They have just too many whole on defense to think they can win 8 games, especially with games vs New Orleans, Philly, New England, Carolina, San Francisco and Atlanta on their schedule. Those teams will all put up plenty of points this year and Tampa will be hard pressed to stop them. I expect 7 wins at the most here.

Blog Post: UFC 160 Velasquez vs. Silva Fight Predictions, Odds and Start Time

UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will put his title on the line tonight as he meets Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva for the second time. The two big men are headlining this evening’s UFC 160 card, which will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada (10:00pm ET start time). UFC 160 fight predictions and odds have Velasquez listed as a prohibitive -800 money line favorite ($100 wins $800) to take out Silva in the main event showdown. Also on the main card is a scarp between former UFC heavyweight strap holder Junior dos Santos and heavy handed brawler Mark Hunt. Dos Santos, who lost his belt to Velasquez in December, is a -425 favorite to end Hunt’s four fight winning streak.

When Cain Velasquez (11-1) and Antonio Silva met in the Octagon in May of last year, the former was coming off the first loss of his career. Velasquez relinquished his heavyweight championship belt and title to Junior dos Santos via first round TKO the previous November and that clearly did not sit well with the former Arizona State wrestler.

Velasquez took his frustrations out on Silva, knocking out the big Brazilian just 3:36 into the opening frame. Velasquez, who went on to regain his title with a unanimous decision win over dos Santos in December, out-struck Silva 28 to 1 in the lopsided affair.

Silva has since recovered, earning impressive TKO victories over Travis Browne and Alistair Overeem to improve to 18-4; however, nothing about either of those performances would suggest he is ready to take Velasquez’ belt.

Velasquez is the better, more powerful striker and his ground game is vastly superior to Silva’s. That said, this is the fight game and anything can happen inside the Octagon, which makes laying $800 to win $100 difficult to do.

UFC 160 Fight Predictions: In order to avoid the heavy, heavy chalk here, parlay Velasquez with dos Santos and Glover Teixeira. Yes, Silva did overcome the odds against Overeem, but that had everything to do with Overeem’s lack of respect for Silva and a ridiculously ignorant game plan (i.e. a Rocky style punch eating extravaganza). Velasquez will not mimic Overeem; he is concerned with winning, not showing up his opponents, and he has the best overall skill set in the heavyweight division.

The Western Conference Finals between the Memphis Grizzlies and the San Antonio Spurs shifts to Memphis, Tennessee for Game 3 tonight. The game is scheduled for an 9:05 PM (Eastern) start time and will be televised on ESPN. Currently the Odds for the game have Memphis favored by 5.5 points while the total sits at 178.

Analysis: The Spurs has a 2-0 lead last year in the Western Finals before losing 4 straight to the Thunder. They will try and not let that happen again. Spurs point guard Tony Parker set a personal playoff-best with 18 assists in Game 2 but isn’t relaxing over the 2-0 edge. “We understand that we didn’t do anything,” Parker said. “We just protected home court and we have a long way to go because we know we’re playing a very good team.” Parker also had 15 points and three steals while bettering his previous personal-best for playoff assists by four. He has been playing with a painful left calf injury suffered in the second-round series against the Golden State Warriors and underwent an MRI exam on Thursday. The results displayed the calf contusion is dissipating and the three-day break without a game also should help Parker be more spry for Game 3. He is averaging 17.5 points and 13.5 assists in the series. Guard Danny Green has been stellar from long range and is 9-for-14 from behind the arc over San Antonio’s last three playoff games, while power forward Tim Duncan has blocked six shots despite shooting 9-for-23 from the field over the first two games. San Antonio has made 23 3-pointers in the series – including a franchise postseason-record 14 in Game 1. San Antonio is a strong 8-1 SU (5-4 ATS) with at least three off-days in between games this season, while Memphis is a poor 3-5 (SU and ATS) with this excess rest.

The Memphis Grizzlies are in must-win mode as the Western Conference finals move to the FedExForum for Saturday’s Game 3. The Grizzlies dug themselves out of a 0-2 hole in their first-round series against the Los Angeles Clippers and will need to do so again with San Antonio winning two on its homecourt. The Grizzlies haven't lost on their home floor during these playoffs, going 5-0 (SU and ATS) and holding these opponents to a mere 89.6 PPG on 42% FG (33% threes). The Grizzlies offense has really struggled since the first round of the playoffs, scoring just 91.4 PPG on 40% FG over seven games. In this series, the team has a paltry 86.0 PPG on 38% FG. But the defense is still capable of winning games for this club, holding three of the five playoff visitors to 83 points or less. The one big consistency for Memphis has been its ball-handling, as the club averages 19.5 APG and 10.6 TOPG for the entire postseason, which equates to a strong 1.83 Ast/TO ratio. Power forward Zach Randolph finally got his game going in the second half of Game 2. He had just four points on 2-of-18 shooting over the first six quarters of the series before finding room to operate during Memphis’ second-half comeback. Randolph finished with 15 points and 18 rebounds – including seven on the offensive boards – and center Marc Gasol also had a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. The Grizzlies need their star post players to find their shooting touch – Gasol is 11-for-28 from the field and Randolph is 7-for-26.

Pick: As much as I wanna go with the Spurs in this one, I feel the Under is the better play. This game just screams ugly and low scoring. Memphis at home has allowed just 87.8 ppg on the year, while in the playoffs at home they have allowed just 89.6 ppg. Not only do they play great defense at home, but they also pay it at a very slow pace and i see them getting that pace in this one. It's their only shot of winning. The Spurs do like an uptempo game, but they will get down and dirty and play that slow game as well. Usually overlooked is the Spurs defense and they come in hot, having allowed just 88.4 ppg in their last 5 games, while allowing just 86 ppg to Memphis in the first two games of the series. Both teams will come out with allot of defensive intensity and that will make for an ugly, low scoring game.

The game is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on the NBC. Currently the odds for the game have the Blackhawks heavily favored to win tonight.

In the history of the NHL Playoffs a team that leads 3-1 in the series has gone on to finish 238-24 (91 percent) of the time. The Red Wings are pretty heavily favored to advance in this playoff series, needing just one win in the next three games to be able to knock out the Chicago Blackhawks. The Red Wings have won three straight games overall over Chicago, who had not lost three straight games at all during the regular season.

Jonathan Toews was certainly frustrated with the officiating and penalties that occurred in Game 4 back in Detroit. He spent some significant time in the box late in the contest for what he believes were not good calls. Yet the Blackhawk captain is moving past that fourth game, knowing that his team needs to win Game 5 in order for their season to continue. If they get caught dwelling on what has happened before they could wind up getting beat tonight. And Toews is struggling, having not scored a goal in his past 10 playoff games dating to last season.

The Red Wings have been playing very well the last month. They were able to win four games in a row to reach the playoffs and then beat the Ducks in seven games. Now they hold a commanding 3-1 lead over the team that was best in hockey during the regular season. A big amount of credit should go to goalie Jimmy Howard, who has a goals against average of 2.21 and saving better than 92 percent of the shots he has faced. Howard has come up huge against the Blackhawks. The Detroit goalie has stopped 86 of 88 shots over the past three games for .977 save advantage in those games.

Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa combined for three shots in Game 4. Patrick Sharp got off to a great start in the postseason, but is without a point in the past two games. They have a lot of talent and a lot of big names, but right now they are getting out worked by the Red Wings.

The Blackhawks faced a similar situation when they lost the first three games of a playoff series against Vancouver two years ago. They managed to force a Game 7 and lost 2-1 in overtime. We think they get a win in this game over the Red Wings. They have too much talent and did pick up a 4-1 win over Detroit in the opener of this series. But, they are in must-win mode and they might be pressing a little bit in this one.

Look for the Wings to continue to put pressure on Blackhawk goalie Corey Crawford. He is going to have to come up huge for Chicago in this game tonight if the Blackhawks are going to be able to stay in this series. But expect them to pick up a win here tonight.

The Eastern Conference semifinals of the NHL Playoffs continue tonight with a Game 5 battle between the New York Rangers and the Boston Bruins. The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on the NBC Sports Network. Currently the odds for the game have the Bruins favored to close out the series.

The New York Rangers will look to not be eliminated tonight in this Game 5 matchup. They were nearly knocked out of the playoffs in Game 4 but were able to come back and win in overtime after trailing by three goals. Bruins goalie goalie Tuukka Rask still is saving better than 92 percent of the shots he is facing right now but obviously wants to improve on his poor showing late in the last game.

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist knows he has to play better as well. The Bruins have been able to make him look pretty pedestrian the past five or six periods overall. At the same time, he knows that the fluke goal scored against Rask in Game 4 that got the Rangers started is just part of the game. Nathan Horton and David Krejci lead the Bruins in scoring with five goals each this post season. Tyler Seguin gave the Bruins a 3-2 lead briefly in Game 4 but the Rangers were able to battle back and get the win needed to propel them to a fifth game.

Rangers coach John Tortorella knows his team can play better. He has been very vocal and critical of the Rangers in this post season but it won't really mean a whole lot if his team doesn't win tonight. If New York can win tonight's game, it will be a completely different series. Remember, just a few years ago the Bruins blew a 3-0 series lead to the Philadelphia Flyers. Don't also forget that the Rangers trailed 3-2 to the Capitals in the opening round and were able to win back-to-back games to advance in the post season.

Rick Nash had a sweet assist on a goal last game and has to continue to put the puck on the net. He leads the Rangers with 40 shots on goal in the playoffs and Derek Stepan's four goals are best on the team this playoffs. Boston, though, has been very tough in home games this year, going 16-5-3.

We like the Rangers in tonight's game. They should be able to continue to get pressure on Rask and the Bruins and we are looking to get on the New York underdog money in this one. The Rangers have come back before and while it's not likely they can win this series, they are at least able to make it a lot more interesting.

The Colorado Rockies and San Francisco Giants will look to break the tie atop the National League West standings tonight as they open a three game set at AT&T Park. First pitch in this evening’s series opener is set for 10:15pm ET. MLB Picks and Odds at 5Dimes have the hosting Giants listed as a -149 money line ($149 wins $100) favorite and the Over/Under set at eight runs (Under favored at -120 odds). The Rockies are drawing +139 odds to even their season series with the Giants at four games apiece.

The 26-21 Giants, who are in a three-way tie with the Rockies and Diamondbacks for the NL West lead, closed out a three game home stand with the Nationals on Wednesday with a 2-1 extra innings loss. San Francisco took the first two games of the series, though, snapping a skid that featured three consecutive losses to the Rockies in Colorado.

The Giants, which had won 10 consecutive games opposite Colorado prior to their recent series at Coors Field, will chase their 18th home win of the season with two-time Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum on the hill.

Lincecum brings a pedestrian 3-3 record and 4.70 ERA to the bump tonight and he is coming off a horrendous outing at Coors Field. The Washington product allowed seven hits and six earned runs over five innings in a 10-2 loss to the Rockies last Saturday.

Prior to the Colorado start, Lincecum allowed just two hits and zero earned runs over seven innings in a 5-1 win against the Braves at AT&T Park.

The Rockies (10-12 road), winners in five of their last six games, will counter Lincecum, just as they did on Saturday, with 23 year old right hander Tyler Chatwood. Chatwood, who is making his fourth start of the season, is 2-0 with a 2.55 ERA in three starts, but his WHIP is a not so wonderful 1.58.

Chatwood has, in some regard, skirted disaster as he has yielded 21 hits and seven walks in just 17.2 innings pitched. Could his comeuppance come tonight?

Notable Trends: The Giants are 4-1 in their last five games as a home favorite against Colorado with a total between 7.5 and 8 runs (Over was 4-1 in those five games).

The Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox continue their four game set tonight with a game two clash at Fenway Park. This evening’s meeting between the Indians and Sox is scheduled to get underway at 7:10pm ET. Boston, which fell to 28-20 with last night’s loss (game behind the first place Yankees in the AL East), will look to tame the Indians lineup with veteran righty John Lackey. Lackey, who is making his seventh start of the season, is 2-4 with a 3.31 ERA and 1.22 WHIP this season.

Lackey is 1-1in two starts at Fenway Park this year, but he has allowed just 11 hits and two earned runs in 13 innings of work at the legendary venue. Lackey gave up just one and zero earned runs in his last outing (six innings pitched), a 5-1 Red Sox win at Minnesota.

Notable Trends: The Indians are 4-1 in their last five games as a road dog against a right hander pitcher. The Red Sox are 1-5 in their last six games as a home favorite with a money line spread between 100 and 120.

Analysis: The Los Angeles Angels are rolling after a miserable start, thanks in large part to the power hitting the team expected to have at the beginning of the season. The Angels, who meet the Kansas City Royals for the second of four road games on Friday, won their season-high fifth consecutive game thanks to four homers during a 5-4 victory in Thursday's series opener. Los Angeles is hitting .323 with nine home runs and has outscored opponents 42-16 during its winning streak. After a poor outing against Houston on May 9, Vargas is coming off back-to-back quality starts. In Sunday’s 6-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox, he gave up four hits over seven scoreless frames, allowing only two runners to reach scoring position. The 30-year-old left-hander has won each of his last four outings against the Royals, carrying a 2.08 ERA in those contests. In six all-time starts against them, Vargas is 5-1 with a 3.38 ERA.

Since taking two of three from the Angels last week, the Royals have dropped six of their last seven to fall five games behind the red-hot Cleveland Indians in the American League Central. The Royals have lost 13 of their past 17, scoring three or fewer runs in 10 of the losses. While Kansas City has struggled, Salvador Perez has done his part to keep the Royals competitive, hitting .393 and registering eight multiple-hit games in May. Mendoza has been solid over his last three outings – all on the road. The right-hander was in line for his second consecutive win after yielding three runs (two earned) over six innings in Sunday’s 4-3 loss to Oakland, but left without a decision after the bullpen let it slip away. Mendoza has been abysmal in his only two starts at home (0-1, 12.10 ERA) and has struggled against the Angels in six appearances (three starts), going 1-1 with an 8.04 ERA.

Pick: Love the Angels tonight. Jason Vargas is starting to pitch much better, while the LA offenses has been on fire of late, scoring 8.4 rpg in their last 5 games, plus they have given Jason 6 rpg worth of support in his last 3 starts. The Royals are headed in the opposite direction as they have won just 1 of their last 6 games and have scored just 3.1 rpg over that stretch. I don't see this offense getting much off of Jason, who has allowed a total of 8 ER's in his last 5 starts vs the Royals, with his teams winning all 5 starts. Luis Mendoza has pitched better of late, but all of his last 3 starts have come on the road, where he has pitched much better this year. In his 2 starts here this year he has a 12.10 ERA and now in 20 lifetime appearances (16 starts) in this park he has a 5.59 ERA, plus in 3 career starts vs the Halos he is 1-1, but with a 9.75 ERA. Two teams headed in opposite directions and with Vargas pitching well and the Offense waking up, I will ride the Halos to get their 6th win in a row tonight.

In tonight's Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals the Pittsburgh Penguins will be looking to eliminate the Ottawa Senators. The NHL Playoffs Start Time for the game is set for 7:30 p.m. and it will be televised nationally on the NBC Sports Network. The NHL Playoffs Odds has the Penguins heavily favored to close out the series tonight at home.

Pittsburgh is showcasing why they are the best team in the Eastern Conference this post season. They knocked out the upstart New York Islanders in six games from the first round and are just one win away from dominating the Senators in five games.

Sens captain Daniel Alfredsson is coming to the end of his career and probably isn't ready for the post season to be over, but his team has been out-played in every game this series. He had to score in the final minute of Game 3 to force overtime before the Sens were able to squeak out a win.

Pittsburgh has two of the best players on the planet but hasn't been to the Eastern Conference Finals since the 2009 season. Both Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have had their injuries in the past but both are healthy enough to play and it shows how important they are to the Penguins. The Pens also went out and picked up Jarome Iginla to bolster their offense.

The NHL's highest scoring team of the regular season is also the highest scoring team of the playoffs, averaging nearly a full goal a game better than the other seven teams remaining in the field. James Neal scored twice in the last win for Pittsburgh, where the Penguins beat up on Ottawa goalies for seven goals.

Senators goalie Craig Anderson has not finished two of the four games in this series. He hasn't been able to keep the Penguins off the scoreboard and that will probably continue tonight. The Pens average better than four goals per game this playoff season while averaging better than 33 shots per game on goal.

Hard to imagine the Penguins not picking up the win tonight in this close-out game. After dominating the Senators in Game 4 of the series and now having a chance to clinch at home, there's no way the Penguins lose this game tonight.

The defending champion Miami Heat will attempt to secure a 2-0 Eastern Conference Finals advantage tonight as they host the Pacers for Game 2 in the best of seven set. This evening’s game is scheduled to tip off at 8:30pm ET at the AmericanAirlines Arena (TNT). NBA Odds at offshore bookmaker 5Dimes are favoring the Heat at -7.5 against the spread and -340 on the money line ($340 wins $100). Indiana is lined at +280 odds ($100 wins $280) to even the series at a game apiece. The total in tonight’s game is set at 180.5 points.

Miami received a major scare on Wednesday night as the hard-nosed Pacers defied the odds makers (played as a +8 against the spread dog) and sent Game 1 into overtime. Indiana failed to capitalize in the extra frame, though, and its coach, Frank Vogel, can take part of the blame.

With under two seconds remaining in overtime and the Heat holding possession, Vogel elected to leave 7-foot defensive stalwart Roy Hibbert on the bench. LeBron James exploited the mistake, blowing past Paul George into to the paint for a game winning layup.

Miami won the game 103-102 despite shooting 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from beyond the arc and 64 percent from the charity stripe (16-of-25). James finished the game with 30 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists in leading the Heat to their Game 1 victory.

The Pacers got 27 and 26 points from Paul George and David West, respectively, while the aforementioned Hibbert registered 19 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks.

Wednesday’s game marked the Heat’s fifth win in their last seven meetings with the Pacers. It, however, was the only victory that did not come by eight or more points. Six of those seven games crested tonight’s posted total of 180.5 points.

Notable Trends: The Over is 10-0 in the Heat’s last 10 games as a home favorite with a total between 190 and 185 points.

Analysis: The St. Louis Cardinals enter the opener of their three-game series against the host Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday with the best record in the major leagues. The Cardinals are a half-game better than the Texas Rangers at 30-16 after taking two of three from the San Diego Padres earlier in the week. They haven’t lost a series since April 26-28, when they dropped the final two contests of a three-game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cardinals should have third baseman David Freese back in the lineup after he missed the last two games with a thumb injury. Lance Lynn is one of the reasons the Cardinals are off to such a hot start, pitching at least seven innings in five of his eight outings and allowing three earned runs or fewer six times. He made two starts against the Dodgers last season, both on the road. He threw six innings and got the win in a 2-1 victory on September 13, giving up a run-scoring double by Adrian Gonzalez in the first before settling down. Lynn also went six innings last May but didn’t get the decision as the Dodgers scored in the bottom of the ninth to win 6-5. He allowed four runs and nine hits in that contest.

The Dodgers are coming off a series win versus the Milwaukee Brewers. They haven’t strung together three straight wins since sweeping the Pirates from April 5-7. Los Angeles' Andre Ethier is hitting .309 against right-handers in his career but just .263 this season. He has a .265 average versus left-handers this year, 26 points better than his career mark. Ethier received the day off against Brewers right-hander Wily Peralta on Wednesday, and his replacement, Scott Van Slyke, doubled twice in the 9-2 victory. 2B Mark Ellis has a .212 career average against St. Louis. Chris Capuano has strung together two excellent starts. He pitched well enough to beat the Atlanta Braves on Saturday, allowing one run and five hits in 7 1/3 innings while not walking a batter. The Cardinals are a familiar team to Capuano as he played for the National League Central-rival Brewers from 2004-2010. He has made 16 career starts against St. Louis, going 5-6 with a 5.83 ERA. The veteran faced the Cardinals twice last season and lasted only 4 1/3 innings in both starts, yielding six runs and 11 hits in a 7-4 loss in July before surrendering four runs and seven hits in an 8-5 Dodgers victory two months later.

Pick: I like the Under in this game. Chavez Ravine doesn't yield too many runs and both starters are pitching good of late. The Dodgers have no offense at all and they have scored just 2.5 rpg for Chris on the year. I expect both offenses to struggle in in this one and put up no more than 6 runs here.

Cantor Gaming, arguably one of the most respected sportsbooks in Las Vegas, has released its highly anticipated NFL season win totals. The Washington Redskins are are expected to have a mediocre year as they have been slated for 8 wins (Even). Washington is at +1800 Odds to win the NFC Championship and +4000 Odds to win Super Bowl XLVIII.

Following an ugly 21-13 loss to the one-win Panthers in Week 9, the record fell to 3-6 and head coach Mike Shanahan believed the season to be a lost cause. He put his players on notice, announcing in his postgame press conference, "Now you're playing to see who, obviously, is going to be on your team for years to come." Coming off their bye, the Redskins responded by going on a seven-game winning streak to capture their first division crown since 1999; it was also the first time since 2005 that Washington finished with at least 10 wins and the first time since '07 that it had qualified for the postseason.

Quarterback Robert Griffin III, the second overall pick out of Baylor and a former Heisman Trophy winner, was largely responsible for Washington's worst-to-first turnaround. He finished his rookie season with a 65.6 percent completion rate, throwing for 3,200 yards and 20 touchdowns, with just five interceptions. He also set the single-season rushing record for a rookie quarterback with 815 yards.

Under normal circumstances, Alfred Morris likely would have been the NFL's offensive rookie of the year in 2012. Named the Redskins' starting running back after preseason injuries sidelined Tim Hightower, Evan Royster and Roy Helu Jr., the sixth-round pick out of Florida Atlantic finished second in the league with 1,613 rushing yards. The award, however, went to Robert Griffin III, the most dynamic threat in the Redskins' read-option attack. With RGIII now recovering from surgery on his right knee, and with no clear timetable for his return, the question must be asked of Morris: Is he a legit star, or did he merely benefit from being the quarterback's sidekick?

The Redskins are going to have a tough time making an impact on free agency, simply because of their cap problems. But the Redskins highest priority has to be the secondary -- at cornerback and safety. They can't afford free agents like Sean Smith or Aqib Tailb, so they'll have to make the right choices in the draft room. Find those guys -- perhaps Oregon's Jordan Poyer or Southeastern Louisiana's Robert Alford at cornerback, and LSU's Eric Reid or Fresno State's Phillip Thomas at safety -- and maybe Washington can make a deeper run in the postseason in 2013.

A new era has begun for the Redskins, and anything less than making the playoffs will be viewed as an unacceptable failure -- even if backup Kirk Cousins is the quarterback when the season begins. From the moment training camp opens, every step Robert Griffin III takes will be scrutinized with eagle eyes. This team is now expected to win after years of futility, but no one knows if the franchise quarterback will ever be the same player again. His health will be breathlessly debated until he proves himself on Sundays.

Blog Post: Philadelphia Eagles 2013 Win Total, Schedule

Cantor Gaming, arguably one of the most respected sportsbooks in Las Vegas, has released its highly anticipated NFL season win totals. The Philadelphia Eagles are not expected to do much this year as they are expected to post just 7 wins (Over -120) on the year. Philadelphia is at +2000 Odds to win the NFC Championship and +4000 Odds to win Super Bowl XLVIII.

After all those seasons of playing competitive and often playoff-caliber football, Reid's Eagles were an epic disaster in 2012, losing 11 of their last 12 games after an illusionary 3-1 start. For the first time since 1998, the year before Reid arrived, Philadelphia had the NFC's worst record, in this case tying the 4-12 Lions for that dishonor. And it was an ugly and painful spectacle to watch, as Philadelphia's effort level waned as the season progressed and the inevitable Reid firing became virtually the only story that mattered.

f there was any symbol of Philadelphia's lost season it was the turnover. The ever-sloppy Eagles tied for the league lead with 37 giveaways, including a boatload of them by Vick. Turn the ball over that many times in a season and the turnover theme is likely to spread to the roster and the coaching staff. It did, and now the Eagles are starting over in 2013.

Insert Chip Kelly and his high octane offense. The Eagles at least possess the kind of skill-position speed needed to play a version of the fast-break football that Chip Kelly won big with at Oregon. Running back LeSean McCoy and receivers DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin should thrive in Kelly's up-tempo offense, and if quarterback Michael Vick can stay healthy and take care of the football, his faltering career might enjoy a renaissance of sorts in the zone-read spread scheme.

Honeymoons are always exciting, if brief. But the bar of expectation has finally been lowered in Philadelphia, and that's going to help Kelly's cause as his first offseason unfolds, because improvement on last year's 4-12 debacle shouldn't be difficult. Kelly's Eagles likely will be re-inventing themselves on both offense and defense, and that takes time and patience. There are a lot of unknowns in this equation. But Philly has cap room to work with, and an advantageous draft position in the opening three rounds, where NFL starters are ready and ripe for the picking. It's a year of transition in Philadelphia, but after the stalemate that the Reid era had become, Kelly will rightly receive the benefit of the doubt as the Eagles go about their renovation project.

Pick: I expect some success from the new fast break offense that the Eagles will employ. This will have to be a difficult offense to defensd, especially since the NFL hasn't faced this kind of offenses year. Philly won't challenge for the division title, but in looking at thier schedule I do see them getting at least 8 wins.

The Minnesota Vikings are clearly in a rebuilding mode as they have been slate for 7 wins (Over -120) this year. Minnesota is at +3000 Odds to win the NFC Championship and +5500 Odds to win Super Bowl XLVIII.

Thanks mainly to an MVP season from running back Adrian Peterson, the Minnesota Vikings orchestrated one of the league's better recent turnarounds, flipping a 3-13 mark in 2011 into a 10-6 record and a playoff berth in 2012. The Vikings' regular season essentially split into three parts: a surprising start, a mid-year slide and a finishing hot streak. Minnesota opened 4-1, notching wins over Jacksonville, San Francisco, Tennessee and at Detroit. But the Vikings then dropped five of their next seven to fall to 6-6, putting their playoff hopes in serious jeopardy. But they ended the season on an impressive four-game win streak -- Minnesota knocked off Chicago and Green Bay at home, while downing St. Louis and eventual AFC North champ Houston on the road.

Peterson's jaw-dropping 2,097-yard season, which carried a 6.0 yards-per-attempt average, certainly led the way. For as great as Peterson was, however, the Vikings' offensive line deserves a boatload of credit, too. Rookie left tackle Matt Kalil was everything the Vikings hoped he would be, and more. He, right tackle Phil Loadholt, left guard Charlie Johnson and center John Sullivan all played almost every snap on offense in 2012, giving Minnesota enviable continuity up front. Loadholt, a pending UFA, might be the player Minnesota most needs to re-sign.

The Vikings need an upgrade at linebacker and a big upgrade at WR to give Ponder and Peterson some help on offense, plus more defensive line depth would be a help as well. All eyes will be on the quarterback position, to see if Ponder appears ready to take the next step. The defense also will warrant plenty of attention -- the Vikings could have new starters in place at all three levels (line, linebackers, secondary) on that side of the ball.

The reality of Minnesota's situation is this: Despite Peterson's presence, this team likely will slide under the radar in its own division again, as the focus mainly falls on Green Bay and Detroit. That lack of attention worked to the Vikings' benefit last season, but will they be able to sneak up on people again?

The Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays open a four game set tonight at the Rogers Centre as both teams look to gain ground on AL East leaders New York and Boston. This evening’s series opener between the two division rivals is scheduled to get underway at 7:07pm ET. MLB Picks and Odds at offshore bookmaker Sportsbook.ag have the hosting Blue Jays listed as a -130 money line favorite and the Over/Under set at nine runs. Baltimore is drawing +120 money line odds ($100 wins $120) to win tonight’s game.

Baltimore concluded an eight game home stand last night with a 6-3 series clinching win against the Yankees. The victory did not produce a winning home stand, though, as the Orioles dropped six of the eight games to bring their record to 25-21 overall.

Baltimore, a 14-9 road team, will chase its third straight win tonight with rookie hurler Kevin Gausman on the hill. Gausman, who is taking a spot on the Orioles injury decimated rotation, will make his major league debut after posting a 2-4 record with a 3.11 ERA in eight starts for the AA Bowie Baysox.

The Blue Jays secured a series win over the Rays last night with a 4-3 extra innings victory at the Rodger Centre. Toronto, which is in the midst of a nine game home stand, brought its record to 19-27 with the win, but it still trails the first place Yankees by nine games in the AL East standings.

The mercurial Brandon Morrow gets the call for the Jays tonight as he looks for his second win of the season. Morrow owns electric ‘stuff’ but he has seldom produced good results on the mound throughout his six year career.

Morrow’s 2013 campaign has been another disappointment, at least to this point, as evidenced by his 1-3 record (eight starts), 5.16 ERA, and 1.46 WHIP. The 28 year old right hander, who gave up three hits and three earned runs (6.1 innings pitched) in a 6-5 April win at Camden Yards, is coming off an ugly outing at New York. Morrow yielded seven hits and five earned runs over five innings in a 2-7 loss to the Yankees.

MLB Picks Betting Trend: The Orioles are 5-1 this season as a road dog when the game total is set at nine runs (Under 4-1-1 in those same six games).

Blog Post: NHL Playoff Odds, Start Time San Jose Sharks at LA Kings Game 5

The San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings take to the ice tonight in Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals. The game is scheduled for a 10:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on the NBC Sports Network. Currently the odds for the game have the Kings favored to win tonight.

In this series we have a 2-2 tie between the Sharks and the Kings. It's a battle of West Coast teams so quite a few fans of the NHL might not be paying much attention just because of time difference. Yet, these games have been physical, fun to watch and now we have a battle of the best of the final three games.

Jonathan Quick has a very good goals against average so far this post season, sporting a 1.64 with a saves percentage of better than 94 percent. It's not hard to believe that he helped them win the Stanley Cup last season and is on pace to get them there again in 2013. He allowed just 10 goals to the St. Louis Blue in the six games played during the first round.

But tonight's game is a big one. The winner will certainly have the upper hand moving into the final two games of the series. Jeff Carter leads the Kings in goals, shots and penalty minutes right now. Mike Richards has logged nine points to this point in the playoffs and the Kings would like to get Justin Williams, who has two goals in the postseason, going a bit. Dustin Brown has just two goals as well while leading scorer Anze Kopitar has just one goal.

San Jose is getting quality play from Joe Thornton and Logan Couture. And leading the team in shots on goal so far is Patrick Marleau with 36.

San Jose is two wins away from its third conference finals appearance in four years, but only if the Sharks manage to crack the Kings' formidable advantage at Staples Center. The Kings finished with a home record of 19-4-1 this season while San Jose was a less than great 8-14-2 on the road.

In this one tonight we like the Kings with the low price. They're going to get a great game from Quick in net and look for them to take advantage when on the power play. The Sharks are a tough group but in this one tonight we're looking for the Kings to win on home ice and take a 3-2 lead in the series.

The San Diego Chargers are slated for a down year, checking in at 7.5 wins (even). San Diego is at +2000 Odds to win the AFC Championship and +6000 Odds to win Super Bowl XLVIII.

The season was a metaphor for Norv Turner's tenure as head coach. San Diego started well (it won its first two games), hit a rough patch (it lost seven of eight), regained its legs down the stretch (it won three of its final four), but ultimately came up short (it missed the playoffs for the third straight year). The only positive for most Chargers fans was that Turner and general manager A.J. Smith were fired after the season.

Turnover have also been a big part of San Diego's collapse and it starts with QB Philip Rivers. After throwing 13 interceptions just once in his first four seasons as a starter, he has done it each of the last three seasons. His 47 turnovers over the last two years trail everyone but Mark Sanchez (52). Part of his problem was the constant drain of playmakers, including running backs Michael Turner (2008), LaDainian Tomlinson (2010) and Darren Sproles (2011) and wide receiver Vincent Jackson (2012), and the injury-related retirements of linemen Kris Dielman and Marcus McNeill.

The defense also was inconsistent under first-year coordinator John Pagano. It held six opponents to 17 points or fewer, but also allowed six to score 27 or more, including three that scored at least 30 (two other clubs reached the 30-point plateau, but did so via a pair of touchdown returns). The unit had 11 sacks against the Jets and five against the Ravens, but in six other games it was limited to one or no sacks.

Many of the core players will be back -- safety Eric Weddle, QB Philip Rivers, wide receiver Malcom Floyd, center Nick Hardwick, defensive linemen Corey Liuget, Kendall Reyes, and linebacker Donald Butler -- but there also will be an infusion of new faces, particularly along the offensive line and in the secondary.

Although the team isn't a handful of savvy personnel moves from challenging for the division, the likelihood of the Chargers overtaking the Broncos in the AFC West is slim. Departing coach Norv Turner said at his exit news conference that the team would not make the playoffs in 2013. It might be one of the few correct calls he made in his final years in San Diego.
