Analysis:The NL East-leading Nationals catch the Brewers fat and happy after Milwaukee just finished a 6-1 road trip against Arizona and Colorado. Now the Brewers come hope after a week of being gone. It's a flat spot for them. But there's much more to like about the underdog Nationals than just the situation. Washington is feeling confident after beating the Braves each of the past two days to move into the NL East lead. The Brewers have played better on the road than at Miller Park, where they have seven fewer victories than they do away from home. Washington is 4-1 in its last five visits to Milwaukee. Gio Gonzalez should be sharper and stronger as this is his second start after missing a month with shoulder inflammation. Gonzalez didn't face the Brewers last year, but went 1-0 against them with a 2.77 ERA in two starts two seasons ago. The Nationals are 25-12 in Gonzalez's last 37 road outings. The Nationals also have won 15 of the past 18 times Gonzalez has faced NL Central Division opponents. Gonzalez has better peripheral numbers than Milwaukee starter Matt Garza, who has yielded at least three runs in 12 of his last 14 starts. Garza has never beaten the Nationals in four previous starts and has a fat 6.41 ERA against them, having last faced Washington two years ago. The Brewers' bullpen is overtaxed after seeing heavy action at Coors Field and could be without closer Frankie Rodriguez, who has pitched three of the last four days and tweaked his ankle on Sunday.
