Detroit at Oakland
pitching matchup will take place in Oakland on Tuesday night when
young phenom Sonny Gray takes on proven ace Max Scherzer. The most
impressive thing about Gray has been the learning curve he has
conquered in his second year. Pitchers sometimes struggle once
hitters get a book on them, but that has not fazed Gray at all, who
is showing tremendous amounts of pitching savvy and maturity at
just 24 years old.
the ball down and gets strikeouts when he needs them. In 72.2
innings at home in his career, Gray has a 2.35 ERA and a .271 wOBA
against. He also gets better with runners on base. Gray faced the
Tigers twice in the ALDS and was strong with a 2.08 ERA over 13
innings with 12 strikeouts.
Scherzer is a
great pitcher, but the A's could present a problem for him.
Scherzer is averaging 4.1 pitches per plate appearance and the A's
preach plate discipline to their hitters. Scherzer is going to work
some very deep counts in this game, which will run his pitch count
up. Hitters are chasing less against Scherzer and a drop in
velocity is giving hitters more time to pick up the speed and spin
on his pitches.
The A's are
going to run up Scherzer's pitch count and Gray should not slow
down against the Tigers, who are really having a tough time over
the last week and are now out west after a long trip and a
disastrous homestand against the Rangers.
