Detroit at Cleveland
baseball in Cleveland as the Tigers will head home to take on the
Texas Rangers on Thursday afternoon in a rather strange scheduling
quirk. The Tigers have to be eager to get home following serious
travel trouble on Sunday night leaving Boston after the late night
ESPN game that prevented them from arriving in Cleveland until
about three hours prior to first pitch on Monday. Their road trip
started on May 12, so they'll be looking to get out of Cleveland
should help with that. Scherzer has been his usual dominant self so
far this season with a 6-1 record and a 1.89 ERA over nine starts.
His strikeout rate has increased back to a career high, as he has
struck out over 30 percent of opposing hitters. The Indians were
awful against Scherzer last year with a .171/.205/.238 slash line.
Current Indians are batting just .221/.291/.342 off of him.
McAllister should be plenty rested after lasting just 1.1 innings
against Oakland in his last start. McAllister has gotten some
unfortunate luck with runners on base as he has stranded just 59.2
percent of opposing baserunners. League average in the American
League is closer to 71-72 percent, so there should be some
progression in that category for McAllister, especially if his
strikeout rate can stay where it is. His 5.36 ERA overshadows a
3.25 FIP, a 3.99 xFIP, and a 3.98 SIERA. McAllister is due for a
couple of quality outings and his ability to throw strikes should
play up in this start against a tired Tigers bunch that simply
wants to get home.
