Red River Shootout - Oklahoma vs Texas

Red River Shootout

Oklahoma v.s. Texas

Texas faces its first real challenge of the season on Saturday afternoon when they take on Oklahoma in the Red River Shootout.  The number 2 ranked Longhorns have cruised to a 5-0 start but are just 1-4 against the spread so far this season.  They have been beating up on inferior opponents and have been heavy favorites in all 5 of their games.  This week however they have been installed as just 3 point favorites over the Sooners of Oklahoma.  The line opened at 3 and despite two thirds of the betting action coming in on Texas, the line has stayed right where it opened at.

Heading into this game, all the talk is going to be about how healthy Sam Bradford is as that is likely what will determine the outcome of this game.  After missing three full games where the Sooners went 2-1, Bradford returned last week against Baylor and played pretty well.  He struggled a bit with his accuracy and looked a little rusty but was still able to throw for 389 yards and a touchdown in the 33-7 Sooner victory.  In order for the Sooners to win this game, Bradford has to play well and has got to get good protection from an inexperienced offensive line.  The rushing attack should help take all the pressure off of Bradford?s shoulders as they are averaging nearly 188 yards a game on the ground.  They have plenty of talent at the running back position but will have to establish a run game so that Texas doesn?t just pin their ears back and blitz Bradford all day long.

The Texas offense has been impressive but it can?t be forgotten that they haven?t played a ranked opponent all year long.  However, they are still averaging over 47 points per game and 479 yards of total offense.  They are led by a veteran quarterback as well in Colt McCoy.  McCoy has played well all year long but has to step up in this big game in order for his team to get the W.  McCoy is the undisputed leader of this Texas team and if he can have success throwing the ball on this tough Oklahoma defense it should open up the running attack for Texas which is averaging nearly 175 yards a game on the ground.

Both defenses have been outstanding from a statistic standpoint but both have tough challenges in front of them as these two offenses are electric.  This game could very well come down to whose defense is able to make a big play by forcing a key turnover and field position will be at a premium.  While Bradford and McCoy are two of the best football players in the country, it is up to the defenses to stop the opposing quarterback and whoever does that will likely win this ball game.
