Vegas Odds: Sweet 16

Las Vegas, Nevada (March 24, 2010) - March Madness continues on Thursday, with the 2010 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament starting its Sweet 16 round. Here are Las Vegas sports betting odds from RJ Bell of Pregame.com:

Odds to win title:

#1) Kentucky: 20% (4 to 1)
#2) Ohio State: 16% (5.5 to 1)
#3) Duke: 15% (6 to 1)
#4) Syracuse: 15% (6 to 1)
#5) Kansas State: 7% (13 to 1)
#6) WVU: 6.5% (14 to 1)
#7) Baylor: 4.5% (21 to 1)
#8) Michigan State: 2.5% (38 to 1)
#9) Tennessee: 2.3% (43 to 1)
#10) Washington: 2.3% (43 to 1)
#11) Butler: 2% (50 to 1)
#12) N. Iowa: 1.9% (52 to 1)
#13) St. Mary’s: 1.9% (52 to 1)
#14) Cornell: 1.7% (59 to 1)
#15) Xavier: 1.5% (65 to 1)
#16) Purdue: 1.3% (75 to 1)

Other Odds:

Kentucky and Duke are better than even money to win their region. The other two regional favorites (Ohio State and Syracuse) have less than 50% chance of winning their region.

The odds of picking a perfect bracket FROM THE SWEET 16 ONWARD are 32,768 to 1.

The odds of having a live perfect bracket after two rounds are over 281 TRILLION to 1.

MATH DETAILS: The odds stated above have been adjusted through a proprietary Pregame.com formula to remove the commission charged by sportsbooks. Without this adjustment, the odds against a result are understated substantially (often upwards of 50%). For example, an event whose true odds are 10-1 against will often be incorrectly stated as 7-1 against (the difference is the commission charged by the sportsbook). As a result, there is an overstatement of the chances of the event happening. The failure of nearly all widely circulated odds to account for this adjustment makes those numbers unreliable and misleading.
