Super Bowl: How Often Do Big Favorites Win?

22 favored by 7-points or more: 17 won the game.

Las Vegas, Nevada (1/19/09) - Super Bowl XLIII is here, and the Pittsburgh Steelers are 7-point favorites over the Arizona Cardinals. RJ Bell of Pregame.com has dug into his archives and uncovered a number of noteworthy Super Bowl point-spread betting facts.

In the prior 42 Super Bowls, there's been 22 teams favored by 7-points or more. 17 of those 22 favorites won the game outright. The favorites covered 11 games, lost 9, and tied 2 against the Vegas pointspread.

RJ Bell of Pregame.com said: "Considering the Super Bowl ideally matches up the two best teams in the league, it's surprising that there's been a team favored by at least a touchdown more than half the time."

The largest favorite in Super Bowl history came in Super Bowl XXIX. San Francisco was favored by 19 points over the San Diego Chargers; the 49ers won that game 49-26.

The biggest underdog to win a Super Bowl was the New York Jets, famously upsetting the Baltimore Colts as a 17-point underdog in Super Bowl III.
