Phil Hellmuth Flushes away Bracelet #12

The scene at the Rio last night was electric as Phil Hellmuth was chasing bracelet #12 in the $50,000 Players Championship. The Amazon room was full of fans watching what could be history in the making. As the Final Table kept getting smaller you could feel that Phil Hellmuth was going to do it.

When they were 4 handed the short stack Owais Ahmed shoved preflop and Phil Helmuth called the All In and it looked good as Ahmed turned up King High while Phil had a Ace. The flop brought some drama as Ahmed hit his 3 outer catching a King. Hellmuth just put his head down but just like Barry Greenstein's Book " Ace on the River" and Phil Hellmuth took the pot and Hellmuth was jumping up and down and that's when you thought this is it he is going to do it.

Hellmuth later took out Ming Ly and went to heads up virtually dead locked in Chips with Brian Rast. These 2 battled all night and you pretty much knew it would come down to these two. Rast had been the aggressor all night and at times appeared to frustrate Phil so it was going to be an exciting Heads Up Battle.

They took a 15 min break before they began Heads Up Play. When they resumed it was Phil who was the aggressor and this seemed to baffle Brian Rast and before long Phil built a commanding lead. Phil had over 80% of the Chips in play and had Rast primed for the knockout blow and Bracelet #12 and then it all went so wrong...

Phil flopped a flush draw and raised all in against Rast's pair it was the right call but the flush never came. Phil was still sitting with a commanding Chip Lead but a few hands later they get it all in again with Phil holding a flush draw again. Once again the flush never came and we were back to even in chips.

I liked Phil's aggression but this isn't Phil Hellmuth Poker going all in on the draw. So it wasn't that long and once again Rast bet out on the flop and Phil moved all in and Rast snap called saying Sorry Phil I have the nuts. Rast flopped a King high straight while Phil once again was chasing a flush and once again it never came.

I agree with the first push given the stack sizes but the second 2 pushes I question as it just wasn't typical Phil Hellmuth poker. Phil generally doesn't get all his money in on a draw let alone 3 times. Also why play Big Hands when you still had the Chip lead? It was small ball with timely re-raises that got you the big chip lead yet the tournament was decided on 3 hands and all 3 were draws.

Still it was a hell of an effort from one of if not the best tournament player out there.

Kentucky Derby Recap: How I turned $104 into $2305

For seasoned Horse Players this article may seem like old news but for the casual Horse Bettor this is a must read...

The Triple Crown Races always present huge overlays for the sharp bettor. In fact some of the biggest scores have been made on Kentucky Derby Day and the other Triple Crown Races. The reason that sharp horse players love to bet the these big races so hard is because of the inflated betting pools.

You see these 3 Races are Events not just Horse races and that's what makes betting these races the best money making opportunities in all of sports betting. Let me explain. The Kentucky Derby is as Big of an event as the Super Bowl. Everyone wants to bet the Super Bowl so they can have action when they watch the event. It's natural you want to feel that rush when you watch. The Super Bowl is the most bet sporting bet in the world. But all that extra money doesn't present you the opportunity to make more money. You may get your team at a better line because so many people are betting the favorite and you are now getting +3.5 points instead of +3. Sure that helps you but at the end of the day when you bet your $110 and win all you are going to win is $100.

With the Triple Crown Races you can make a really big score for a small amount of money. In horse racing the money bet goes into the betting pool and all of that money (after the track takes it's cut) is then divided by the winning ticket holders. So the more bet the bigger the payoffs can and will be.

With so many people betting just because they want to watch the race they are putting money into this pool and frankly most of these people know nothing about horse racing so their money is referred to as dead money as they really have no shot of picking a winning exacta or trifecta unless it's pure dumb luck (they hit their lucky number). So all of the extra money just increases the pie that the actual winners are going to divide up and we all know the bigger the pie the bigger slice we all get.

So in comparison betting the Super Bowl you still only win what you wager the odds are set but with the Triple Crown Races the sky's the limit.

How I turned $104 into $2,305

In this year's Kentucky Derby I advised my clients to bet 2 horses Win-Place-Show one of those horses was Animal Kingdom who won and paid 43.80 - 19.60 - 13.00 so a $2 wager across the board (Win-Place-Show) would have netted 76.40 for a $6 investment. $20 across the board a $60 investment would have returned $764.

But the real money is and was made in the Exacta's & Trifecta's where you pick the first & second place finisher in the exacta and in trifecta you pick the first 3 finishers.

Here's what I told my clients to do it cost them $104 to bet exactly what I said and for their $104 investment it returned $2,305 and this is thanks to the inflated betting pool with all that dead money.

#16 ANIMAL KINGDOM Win-Place-Show

$1 Exacta Box 1-8-15-16-19 = $20
$1 Ex Wheel 15-16-19/ 1-8-12-13-15-16-19 = $18
$1 Ex Wheel 1-8-12-13-15-16-19 / 15-16-19 = $18
$1 Trifecta Wheel 8-15-16-19 / 8-15-16-19 / 1-8-13-15-16-19 = $48

My betting attack was more aggressive because I knew if we won our payoff would justify the money spent. You see in a normal horse race I would not bet so many combinations because a normal betting pool would not generate enough money to show long term profits betting the race that deep. But the Triple Crown Races do so don't be afraid to but those extra horses in your wagering strategy when betting these special races.

The Exacta returned $329 while the $1 Trifecta returned $1,976

Those not familiar with this type of betting strategies here's the low down a Exacta Box is taking a group of horses and putting them together we did a 5 horse box with meant as long as 2 of those 5 horses finished 1st & 2nd we win.

The second wager was a Exacta wheel where we put a certain number of horses to finish 1st. In our bet we had 3 horses on top meaning one of those 3 had to win the race. We then had those same 3 horses and 4 other horses in the second spot meaning any of those 7 horses could finish 2nd. It gives us more chances to hit the exacta. The more horses you use the more the Bet will cost you but again because of the inflated pool you can afford to bet a ticket with more combinations that increase your chance of winning.

Finally the last bet is the Trifecta which is the same concept as the exacta but we had a third group of horses to run 3rd in the race. If you hit all 3 your payout will be huge as it was in this year's Kentucky Derby because our $48 bet brought back $1976.

If you want to be a smart bettor take advantage of great money making opportunities when they present themselves. The Triple Crown Races always provide that opportunity. If you don't know anything about horses seek the advice of a professional.

You can't Win the Kentucky Derby in the Post Position Draw but many horseman believe you can lose it at the Post Position Draw.. In today's Video I break down the value of Post Positions in the Kentucky Derby. I also discuss the 3 different racing styles of horses and what style isbest suited to win the Kentucky Derby..

Below is a chart that represents the number of Kentucky Derby Winners by Post Position. Although #1 post has won the most Derby's it is no longer the best place to be and is explained in today's Video. Note that Kentucky Derby didn't always have the large fields that it has today. In fact over the history of the Kentucky Derby the average field size has been 12.46 and there was even 2 years that there was only 3 horses entered. So when looking at the chart below the inside post positions will have more wins just because they have had way more starters.

The Ups and Downs of Poker from 2.6 Million to 5 cent 10 cent

Poker is a fascinating game as the swings can be so severe. When your running good it's like your on the Top of the World but when the deck turns cold the fall can be fast. The other night I stopped at the M Resort on my way home to place some wagers and chill watching the games. The M poker room is set up right next to the sportsbook so if you desire you can play poker and watch all the sports action, which is just what I did.

Being a Tuesday Night the poker room was not busy and they only had a 1-2 No Limit Game going along with 4-8 limit so I sat down at the 1-2 Game to pass the time. Much to my surprise I see a familiar face it was Poker Pro Scott Fischman playing 1-2 at the M at my table. Scott was nice as he was there with a buddy playing 1-2. Scott and his buddy got into a side bet over whether or not a guy at the table made a call or a raise. The 2 went back and forth and decided to wager on it.

I guy raised preflop to $6 and a guy behind threw in two $5 chips and Scott's buddy insisted that should of been a raise instead of a call. They went back and forth before making a bet on it. Once they agreed on the Bet I said it is not a raise because the one chip rule applies. Scott's buddy smartly there were 2 chips bet sir. I said the bet was $6 there are no $6 chips so it would take 2 chips to make that bet. By throwing two $5 chips in without announcing a raise it is treated the same as the one chip rule for a oversized chip, which is just a call unless a raise is announced. Well they decided to call the Floor Man they know at the Aria to make a ruling and the answer was exactly what I said...lol

But back to the story Scott Fischman who has 2.6 million in tournament earnings and was at the top of the poker world in 2007 is now grinding 1-2 at the M Resort. What was even more bizare is while he was playing 1-2 Live at the M he was online playing at Full Tilt from the table. I didn't know what level he was playing till I went home that night and logged into Full Tilt and looked him up. He was playing 5 cent 10 cent NL on Rush Poker...

The $45,000 Seat Change

I was at Red Rock Casino last night playing poker and watching the BCS National Championship Game. Red Rock is part of the Stations family of casinos. Stations has what is known as the Jumbo Hold'em Poker Bad Beat Jackpot.

The Jackpot starts at $150,000 and grows until it is hit. A qualifying bad beat is quad 10's or better getting beat. So now that you know the rules let's set the story.

Guy in seat #10 gets up to cash out. Guy in seat #6 says to dealer he wants to move to seat #10 after the dealer button passes seat #10 so he doesn't have to post the blinds again. A new player a young girl in mid to late 20's comes to sit down. She begins to sit in seat 10 but the dealer tells her she has to wait 3 hands because Seat 6 wants that seat.

Finally the seat change happens and the older guy late 60's early 70's takes his new seat in the 10 position and the young girl sits down in seat #6.

Four hands later the magical hand occurs. The flop comes down 10J10 with 2 spades. The board checks around there are 4 players in the hand. The turn is the 6 of spades. Girl in seat 4 bets out, girl in seat 6 raises it folds back to girl in Seat 4 who moves ALL IN. Girl in Seat 6 snap calls. Seat 6 has quad 10's and girl in seat 4 has Q9 of spades for the flush….but we still have the river card and it's the King of spades for a straight flush.

The girl in seat 6 is shocked as the dealer yells Straight Flush High High sorry you just lost but you won $45,000….. The girl had no reaction she didn't know or understand what just happened and what the bad beat jackpot was… It took about a minute for her to believe she just won $45,000. The girl who had the straight flush got $30,000 and everyone playing poker at that moment in all Stations casinos got a player share of $326.

Everyone was clapping & cheering in the poker room all but one person who didn't say a word the rest of the night. The old guy who moved from seat 6 to seat 10 as just 4 hands ago that was his seat and would have been his $45,000.

I have to say I never saw a more sick look on someone's face that he had on his face….

So I guess the moral of the story is the grass always isn't greener on the other side…Think twice before you make that seat change…because you just never know!!

NFL League Offices forcing Bettors to Take the OVER!!

The NFL's hard stance on fining players for hard hits has handcuffed the league's best defenses. Playing against an aggressive, hard hitting defense players would think twice before wanting to go over the middle on a pass play. Well that fear is now gone as you can't punish a player anymore. I remember when Pittsburgh Steeler great Jack Lambert once said in regards to the league wanting to protect the QB him saying "why not just put dresses on them"!! That's what the league has become and if one week of the new rule changes is any indication bettors can forget about betting UNDER in the NFL.

Last week there was 14 games played and 10 of them went OVER with most of them going way OVER the posted number. Clearly one week is not enough of a case study but as a Handicapper looking for a edge you want to be out in front of the trend before Vegas makes the necessary adjustments if this proves to be a viable pattern rather than just a one week trend. What I saw on Sunday makes sense as your giving the offense's all of the advantages because the defenders are now thinking before they lay that hit that would of made the receiver drop the ball. Or on those quick slants or crossing patterns if the defender is pulling up on his hit it gives the receiver a chance to put a move on the hesitant would be tackler and turn a 7-9 gain into a big play.

This is something worth following over the next few weeks but I would be careful betting UNDERS given what I saw last week.

Tease Me Baby - Sports Betting for Dummies

Ok guys when it comes to sports betting I'm Old School I don't advise you play parlays or teasers but there is one time when I will make an exception to that rule in regards to teasers. The NFL presents some very good opportunites to make 2 team 7 point teasers. Using that full touchdown to move the line 7 points up or down creates solid winning opportunities.

The reason for this is that in the NFL the lines are the sharpest of any of the sports and using that extra 7 points can be present great betting situations. With teasers you hope the Vegas oddsmakers have done a very good job with the lines because if they have it makes your job so much easier. That concept was never more evident than this past Sunday October 17th when there was 13 NFL Games on the schedule meaning if betting teasers on just the game not the Over/Under there would be 26 possible teams to tease.

Knowing nothing about betting, nothing about football and for that matter nothing about teasers you had a 84.6% chance of winning on Sunday. That's right 84.% chance of winning because of the 26 teams playing on Sunday 22 of them were a winner if you used them in a 7 pt teaser. That's 22 of 26 no matter who you picked.

So if your ever going to bet Teasers do it in the NFL but with that said here are a few tips that will increase your winning percentage.

NEVER TAKE A SMALL FAVORITE and TURN THEM INTO A SMALL DOG (-3.5 to +3.5) although it seems inviting you are not getting the best value from your extra 7 points

ALWAYS BEST TO TAKE DOGS UP as by adding the the extra 7 points to the line you are taking the spread thru another score. Example by adding 7 points to +1.5 or higher now means it takes 2 Scores to beat you. Teasing teams up to over 10 and 14 points forces a blowout for you to lose.

TAKE MARGINAL FAVORITES DOWN this is just the opposite of last situation. Teasing Favorites of -7 to -9.5 puts you in a situation where basically your team just has to win because even at -2.5 more games would fall on 3 than less than 3 so if you have the outright winner you will generally cash your bet.
