So I am watching some AWA Wrestling on ESPN Classic....

And it was made even more clear why Vince ended up the victor in the WWF vs the wrestling world. Man, the AWA in the final years before they declared bankruptcy was soooooooooooo bad. The storylines were so lame. The announcers were so lame. Shit, I remember being a little kid and thinking their damn wrestling dolls were lame compared to the WWF ones (yes, I said WWF).

The one highlight of watching the old school AWA was the fact it made me realize wrestling was bigger back than. I know people will argue the ratings and crowds of today, but I counter with one great point. Who is Tony Leone? You know Tony. The guy who is already in the ring before the match starts. No cool outfit. No entrance music. Most of the time, not even a nickame, just names like Joe Smith or Bob Jones. Back in the 80's you would watch wrestling with not one good match besides the semi-decent closer at the end of the hour. Wrestling in the late 90's and beyond has to keep pushing it and having big names in almost every match to get an audience. I remember sometimes all you would get on an old NWA show would be a Black Bart vs Ronnie Garvin match. On the the old  WWF maybe an SD Jones vs Greg "The Hammer" Valentine. You remember going to house show and even those cards would be filled with tons of squash matches. In the middle of the card you had a decent match, second from last maybe a mid-level titled defended, than the main even would be a real main event. I can recall during an intermission at Cobo or the Joe when they would hype up the next coming house show and how tickets were on sale now. "Dad, we have to go, we have to go, Sgt. Slaughter is fighting the Iron Sheik in a "boot camp match!".

Even though the AWA wrestling is even worse now than I remember, I still have the TIVO set for each episode to relive some of the past when wrestling was enjoyable to watch and follow.

Johnny Detroit has built an impressive winning record: He has been booted or had limits lowered at 9 offshore sports books, has numerous documented Top 5 finishes in both NFL and College Football and his... Read more
