Regarding Greg Oden...

OK. Let me say a few things about my comments on Greg Oden that aired on The Fan last week.

First off, I listened to them and was, quite frankly, embarrassed. I didn't intend to come across so abrasive, but I did, and I have no other choice but to own up to it.

There is one line I would like to take back, where I said "I can't stand to be around" Oden. I think a more accurate reflection of my feelings would have been to say 'I'm sick of dealing with the entity of Greg Oden." The entity of Oden is the media mosh pits around him. It's hearing stupid questions, like ones about his beard. It's the incessant questions on the radio, and in internet chats, about him. And yes, it's the actual dealing with Greg himself. I totally stand by my comments that the guy is not pleasant to be around. There is nothing enjoyable about it.

At the same time, he has never been a jerk. Never. But he's sullen, uninterested, he mumbles, and generally acts like he is living a tortured life. And that's where it gets frustrating for me. There is a great kid somewhere inside this shell he has crawled into. I've seen it. I saw it at the Orlando Pre-Draft camp before Portland drafted him, when he had a table of reporters practically rolling on the ground in laughter. I saw it in an interview I did with him at a downtown Portland hotel, when he was moving, thoughtful and engaging and smart. I miss that. I think Portland misses that. Because really, that's Greg. And that part of Greg is a sliver of what made him a great basketball player. Now, that sliver is gone.

But look, I overstepped my bounds in my choice of words. This isn't the first time. And it probably won't be the last. One of my weaknesses is that I don't take myself very seriously, and as any of my friends can attest, I'm the worst at blurting something out before thinking about it. Bottom line is I need to do a better job of understanding my responsibility. I have to be better.

Whether or not I tell Greg all of this tonight, tomorrow, or sometime in the future ... I don't know. I'm usually a guy who confronts things head on, but I will let Greg dictate, then play it by ear. My sense is that Greg cares, but doesn't. Nobody likes bad things said about them, but at the same time, I think he is smart enough to see who is saying them. In other words, if Brandon Roy said he can't stand being around the guy, Greg would care. That Jason Quick said it? Who cares.

  • Ha true.. the Guy can dunk.. and that's literally the extent of his offensive skills... the team would flow so much better with Joel as a starter. Plus I think Andre can open up more dunking opportunities for Greg then Blake can... so in that sense its best for everyone

  • And seriously.....Oden's offensive game is about as good as a hightly touted 8th grader................Sadly.....ANOTHER FACT........

  • It really was amazing how much better the team played last night with pryzbilla in there.. they started the third off great and then literally as soon as Greg gets in the game the hawks take a five point lead... that being said.. of they stopped calling bs fouls on him, things could be different.... I mean the Guy gets double doubles in like 15 min of playing time per game, and has been great on the offensive boards.

  • It's official........Greg Oden is a flippin' BUST.........WOWzers......

  • ON that note.....the ONE team I hope Portland doesn't have to face is Houston..........Yao KILLS us & 3's just start reigning........it's not fun............

  • GREAT courtesy bump - I agree 100%.

  • If Portland has any shot of getting out of the 1st round of the Western Conference playoffs, they WILL NEED Greg Oden to give them his 6 fouls & his 24-28 minutes on the court..........just need him on the court to spell Pryzbilla..& use his fouls that WE KNOW he will use...........anyways......vent over.....

  • I am becoming increasingly WEARY about one Greg Oden............& for good reason at this point....dude just cannot & will not ever be able to play more than 60 games in a NBA season.....I must say what a INCREDIBLE job Joel Pryzbilla has done this season, easily one of the 5 most undervalued players in the NBA this season. Without question!

  • Ya Matty.....no real suprise here....he has had his best games vs teams that are SOFT at the C spot....he has done well vs the Gadzuric's & Biedrins type "slender" big men....and STRUGGLED terribly vs the C with some size to go with their heigth.....& that is to be expected obviously IMO.......thank GOD for Pryzbilla....he should flat out All-Star consideration.......Pryzbilla that is.............

  • Dominated Gadzooks tonight - best game of his career.

  • He is coming around some...& he will only improve as his confidence improves.......He'll be fine barring some kind of major injury....

  • Hey, GF. I've been noticing Oden's playing well lately. I'm wondering what this writer have to say now

  • Ugg........you had to go "Rider" and the Bob the "dipshit" Whitsitt era on me didnt you Steve.......That donkey was flat out playing his fantasy basketball team with Paul Allen's money for years.....Part 1 of the whole turnaround for the Portland organization was getting RID OF THAT CLOWN (Whitsitt)....I have to stop here, or I will go on forever with ALL the mistakes that TOOL made....

  • What a wuss....

Quick doesn't like 'dealing with Greg Oden because he's 'sullen and uninterested'??

WHEN DID THOSE QUALITIES BECOME REQUIREMENTS OF THE '5 SPOT' on NBA Roster?

Does he not grant every request with graciousness and humility?

WHAT THE HELL MORE DO YOU WANT FROM THE GUY!

NO WONDER THESE GUYS BECOME JADED, DEFENSIVE, REACTIONARY INDIVIDUALS IF YOU EXPECT THEM TO DO BACK-FLIPS AND WAX POETIC WHENEVER THE PRESS COMES CALLING!?!

MAYBE YOU'D LIKE A RETURN OF THE DAYS WHERE EASY RIDER WAS INSISTING THEY WERE 'LYNCHING DUDES RIGHT DOWN THE ROAD UNTIL A FEW YEARS BACK', OR SHEED'S "JUST AS LONG AS MGMT CONTINUES TO 'C.T.C.', I REALLY DON'T GIVE A DAMN" - or 'THE OL' BOTH TEAMS PLAYED HARD' ROUTINE.....

Pretty 'Douchey' of you, Quick.....blaming the players for not providing your Column material for you...do you own freaking homework, Quick!

  • Welcome to the fold GF in the blogs.  Nice effort on your first one.  People need to bear in min this basically is his rookie year and we was out an entire year and then missed some games early with an ankle. he has not played all that much... I am in the hopes for Blazer fans that he begins to excel in the near future, he is very wet behind the ears yet....
