In this segment Andy and Scott Take a look at how the NFL's emphasis on Illegal Contact and Defensive Holding may affect NFL Totals this year.
eScott starts out with NFL News of Pat Bowlen stepping down from his position at Denver.
Also Devonte Fields have been separated from his Team at TCU due some off the field troubles.
Mike Pereira (NFL Rules Analyst) was quoted in a tweet saying that "illegal contact and defensive holding fouls will be a point of emphasis this year" and he ended the tweet by saying "More offense". The last time these rules were a point of emphasis it went from 79 fouls called in 2003 to 171 in 2004.
Point of emphasis does not mean a rule change, but rather the fact that they will enforce it more. This should increase scoring, but also they will have a point of emphasis on offensive pass interference.
The NFL would like to get more scoring as it increases ratings, which translates to more money.
In the beginning of the year NFL totals may be put out a bit higher with the rules enforcement, but Andy feels that the first couple weeks of the season it would be a good Idea to take a wait and see approach.
We also may see the NFL start of using this allot at the beginning of the year and then calling it less frequently as the season goes on. By this time NFL totals MAY be inflated, which could be a good time to look to the Under.
Pereira feels that the offense will win out eventually and more points will be put on the board. Scott feels that we will just see too many flags that will slow the game down.
The Oddsmakers may be affected by this as they have been hearing now how scoring should increase in the NFL.
