  • 10-team non-keeper league
  • Snake draft
  • All TDs = 6 points
  • 1 point for every 10 yards rushing, 10 yards receiving, and 25 yards passing
  • No PPR

We start:

  • 1 QB
  • 2 RB
  • 2 WR
  • 1 Flex (RB/WR)
  • 1 TE
  • 1 K
  • 1 DEF/ST

I drew the #2 pick.  Adrian Peterson went first.  Here's the team I drafted, by round (overall selection in parentheses):

  1. (2) RAY RICE - RB, Ravens: McGahee is gone, Rice is getting the goal-line carries, and Vonta Leach (Arian Foster's lead blocker last season & best blocking FB as voted by his peers) will be clearing the way.  Rice is also good for plenty of receiving yards as well.  Coaches have already said that Rice will stay in games until he says he needs to come out.  I'm seeing a big year for the little dude out of Rutgers.
  2. (19) DREW BREES - QB, Saints: Rodgers, Vick & Brady were already gone at this point.  With passing TDs worth 6 points, I wanted to make sure I got a top QB.  Mission accomplished.
  3. (22) SHONN GREENE - RB, Jets: This is the spot in the draft where I may look back and kick myself.  I passed on Larry Fitzgerald, but in the moment (and you don't have long to make these decisions) I felt that the WR list was a lot deeper than the RB list.  LT really crapped out at the end of last year and he's another year older.  Greene finished the season strong and should carry the majority of the load on what is a run-first team.
  4. (39) DeSEAN JACKSON - WR, Eagles: This pick pains me to this day, and probably will all season.  This goes against my "Never have an Eagles player on my fantasy team" policy, but there was no way I could pass on Jackson at the end of Round 4 when I still didn't have any receivers.  Like him or not (I do NOT), this guy can take it to the house every time he touches the football.  He's playing for a new contract, which means motivation to put up big numbers should remain high.  As a side note, the guy picking right before me took Jeremy Maclin.  I'm still scratching my head over that one.
  5. (42) DEZ BRYANT - WR, Cowboys: Come on, you KNOW I had to have at least ONE Cowboys player on my team!  Seriously though, Dez was really coming on last season before getting injured.  And that was with Kitna as his QB.  He's a big, physical receiver with mid-4.4 speed and showed great hands last season.  Romo has good chemistry with Miles Austin, but there's no questioning that Dez is the bigger, stronger & faster of the two.  If Kitna figured that out, I think Romo will, too.  And there should be plenty of footballs to go around.  Austin has been battling a hamstring injury this preseason and we know how those things tend to linger.  Looks like the way is paved for #88 to have a big season.  And hey, he's a BRYANT.  You can never go wrong with a Bryant.  Big Smile
  6. (59) BRANDON MARSHALL - WR, Dolphins: I like Marshall as my #3 WR.  He's big, fast, and finally healthy.  He's looked good this preseason, too.  May be a "feast or famine" guy, but he looks capable of putting up the same numbers he produced in Denver.  And that's not a bad #3 WR to have.
  7. (62) OWEN DANIELS - TE, Texans: Another guy that's finally healthy.  With Andre Johnson getting the defensive attention, Daniels is Schaub's next-favorite target.  In the last four games of last season (when he was healthy), Daniels led the team in targets and was tied for the team lead in receptions.  He has a great chance to be a Top-5 TE this season.
  8. (79) FRED JACKSON - RB, Bills: Jackson really stepped up after Marshawn Lynch was traded to Seattle last season.  CJ Spiller will spend a lot of his time on special teams, so Jackson should still see a nice workload.  And that's about as much as you can hope for from a #3 RB.
  9. (82) TIM HIGHTOWER - RB, Redskins: The only Redskins RB that I've seen do anything this preseason.  He seems to have earned the starting job, which is about all I'm looking for from a #4 RB in Round 9.
  10. (99) MIKE TOLBERT - RB, Chargers: While not the starter in San Diego, Tolbert does get the passing down work as well as the goal-line carries.  And Ryan Mathews hasn't proved much yet.  As my #5 RB, Tolbert could come in nicely as an injury replacement or bye-week filler.
  11. (102) MATTHEW STAFFORD - QB, Lions: Many expect the Lions to be playoff contenders this season.  I agree.  One of the reasons why they contend will be Stafford.  Injuries are my biggest concern with him, but I can't go wrong with him backing up Brees.  I'm hoping Stafford starts out as strongly as I think he will because it will give me some good trade bait to upgrade either my RB or WR stable.
  12. (119) JAMES JONES - WR, Packers: With Driver another year older, Jones has the potential for some big games in that Packers offense.  Worth a shot in the 12th Round.
  13. (122) JACOBY FORD - WR, Raiders: Getting almost any team's #1 WR in the 13th Round looks good to me, especially as my #5 WR.  Ford averaged almost 19 yards per catch last season and that big-play ability makes him an intriguing 13th-round pick for me.
  14. (139) SAINTS DEF/ST: 2009's #1 fantasy defense dropped to 16th last season.  They've beefed up their front four and still have one of the better secondaries in the league.  This Gregg Williams-led defense should have a nice bounce-back season.  Darren Sproles should be good for a couple punt and/or kick-return TDs as well.  They were the 8th DEF/ST to come off the board.  I'll gladly take 'em.
  15. (142) STEPHEN GOSTKOWSKI - K, Patriots: It goes without saying that the Patriots are going to score plenty of points this season.  That should mean plenty of points for Gostkowski.
  16. (159) ROBERT MEACHEM - WR, Saints: Marques Colston is the #1 WR in New Orleans, but he's coming back from offseason knee surgery.  And Brees likes to spread the ball around, so Meachem should get plenty of chances.  It doesn't hurt that this is also a contract year for Meachem.  Hopefully, for both of us, he steps up.  That would be a nice bonus for me as my #6 WR.  A guy in my division was snapping up Saints (Ingram & Graham) because I drafted Brees, so this pick was also a bit of a defensive maneuver on my part.
  17. (162) ISAAC REDMAN - RB, Steelers: Counting the playoffs, Rashard Mendenhall carried the ball 385 times last season.  The punishment from a workload of that size tends to wear on a RB the following year.  If Mendy breaks down, Redman would be a nice last-round steal.  Note: I did drop Redman in order to pick up the Giants DEF/ST for Week 1 because starting my Saints DEF/ST at Green Bay just does not look like a wise move.  Barring anything unforeseen, I plan to pick up Redman again after Week 1.

If you're a fantasy football fanatic like me, let me know what you think.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, brother.  You know how these things go.  Things often look good on paper; then the injury bug hits.

Dude, I seriously have never seen a guy with so much bad luck when it comes to injuries on his fantasy football teams as you.  Just unreal the last couple seasons.  Hopefully, the law of averages kicks in and you have better luck in that area this season.  Good luck with your draft.

Amen, brother.  Hope you have a great football season betting-wise and in your fantasy league.  Beer

Great team dwayne, marshall as a 3rd wide is nasty, and in hindsight you avoided foster too, which im sure is eating away at a lot of guys that took him number 1 overall also after the recent news.  BOL this year.

Seeing that Chris Johnson has signed, Ray Rice may now fall into my lap,  and you being that high on him I may just take him over Andre Johnson.  Thanks for your insight and good luck with your team this year.

Thanks, NL.  Yeah, I knew going into the draft that I'd be avoiding Foster.  I've never won a fantasy championship by drafting a team based on LAST SEASON'S stats.  It's about what guys do THIS SEASON that will determine how my team does.

Good luck this season, brother.

I really don't think you can go wrong with either Rice or AJ.  Good luck on your draft, my friend.  Let me know how it turns out.

Pretty solid team. Your stacked at RB no doubt. Your WR are kinda hit or miss. Could be really good or just decent. But your RB depth gives you the option to trade for a WR if need be. Agree w/ you on going w/ Rice #2. Would have done the same thing.

Agreed, my top WRs will have weeks where they blow up and weeks where they crap out.  I'm hoping Stafford starts strong because I know at least one team owner who will be looking to make a trade.  With this team, I should definitely be able to make a trade for another WR at some point.  Good luck this season.

Nice looking squad DB!  Love that Stafford pick, he's actually my starter in one league.  If he stays healthy.....look out!

So if you had the first pick, would you still have taking Rice? or AP?
