When the 49ers go on the road, they are giving up a whopping 35.2 points per game. So far, that makes them the worst road scoring defense in the NFL. 2.2 points worse than the Saints laughingstock defense away from the dome. They've allowed at least 27 points in every road game so far.
But when they play in Santa Clara, they only give up 15.2 points per game. That makes them the #2 ranked home scoring defense (.03 ppg behind the #1 Patriots). Better than Seahawks in Seattle, Broncos in Denver and Panthers in Charlotte. They haven't allowed more than 20 points in a home game all year.
I don't think I've ever seen a home/road defensive split like that before. Horrid on the road and elite at home. This appears to be the reason why SF is 3-2 at home with an avg. margin of -1.6 ppg while they are 0-5 on the road with an avg. margin of -21 ppg (because the offense looks the same regardless of QB or venue).
It's interesting to see how they perform vs similarly rated offenses at home vs on the road. I want to see how close Arizona can get to matching the 47 points they put up vs SF in Glendale when they meet in Santa Clara today.
