Teddy Cover & Dave Malinsky discuss how they prepare for football season.
The break is over and now it's time to focus on football.
One difficulty for Dave and Teddy is that they do do baseball. Dave's goal is to have the NFL stuff semi ready to go by the time training camp starts, because that we he can focus on the daily goings on at each camp. He will go back to 2014 and review his notes from that season and go back through his own ratings. He goes back before he goes forward.
Teddy also likes to have his NFL work done before training camp. That includes having his Win Total report done, which will already give him a pretty good read on how the teams will fare. part of the work includes player changes, coaching changes and even the position coaching changes that are usually overlooked. All of that comes into play but you must have an accurate assessment of where teams were at the end of last year, like strength of schedule and the advanced metrics of a team. Did they perform the way their stats indicated they would.
The next month an a half will be key for getting ready for the NFL as you will start to really find out about the teams.
One metric to look at is the turnover margin. It is not always accurate. hail Mary's that end a half and are picked off are not turnovers and the same can be said for a pass that is picked off late in a game if your down like 10 points late in a game and a deep pass gets picked off. Take the forced turnovers out in your handicapping as a team that was -12 in turnovers last year may be just -6.
