It is almost impossible for me to watch NFL games, and the blunders coaches make. I find myself shaking my head, while the announcers often applaud the shockingly bad decisions. Examples:
1. Jim Caldwell down 0-14, 4th and 6 from the Atl 36 punts. Has he ever watched an NFL game before? Jim, what do you think Atl WANTS you to do there?
2. Caldwell calls a timeout with over 3 minutes remaining, Atl with the ball and the lead. EVERY coach gets this wrong. NEVER a reason to burn your timeouts on D until there is 2:30 or less remaining. For all you know, you will get the ball back, and 2:00 is AN ETERNITY for an NFL team......you won't run out of time......but you might score too quickly.
3. Eagles, tie game, 4th an 1 from the 2, and they kick a fg with 2:00 to play. This one is so egregiously bad, it is shocking when you run the math with any parameters. Obviously, the optimal call is to QB sneak, fast count, rush to line, 3 WRs.....AND tell your qb to fall forward and try to get the ball just short of the goal line, reach it forward if stuffed, hold it back if clearly on the goal line. Regardless, if you screw up and get the TD, you are in great shape. If you get the 1st down you win. If you get stuffed, YOU ARE STILL a big favorite to win. But......the SECOND you kick the fg, suddenly your are only about 2/3 to win the game. If you are a Cards fan, your are screaming "KICK THE FG!!". It's so obvious on every level, I am just shocked coaches cannot make the right calls.
Clearly, the NFL head coach has too much on his mind. He needs 2 strategists in the booth who consult, can make lightning fast decisions and can get in his head phone to tell him what to do, with the head stategists being in his head phone.
