The Bobcats have a new head coach in Everett Withers who has been a college coach for 20-plus years while also having a couple of stops in the NFL. He’s been a DC at Minnesota, North Carolina and Ohio St.
This year’s team is relatively inexperienced especially on offense. While QB Tyler Jones is back for another year, they lose their top RB and 6 of their top 7 WR’s. 3 of their starting OL also depart.
On defense, the top 2 DL return, but their next 4 best players are gone. The opposite is true of the LB corps as the top 2 depart but the next best 4 are back. The secondary sees the return of 7 of the top 10.
The Bobcats transitioned to the FBS as a WAC member and has been in the Sun Belt since. Under Head Coach Dennis Franchione Texas St improved from 4-8 to 6-6 and then to 7-5 before falling back to 3-9 last season and a coaching change was made. Everett Withers came from James Madison where he took over a 6-6 program with only 1 play-off appearance in 5 years and led them to back-to-back 9-4 campaigns. With Ohio, Arkansas and Houston to open the season it looks like an 0-3 start but a 3-3 after 6 games is possible.
