Villanova has an unusual zone defense that held Elis, Kansas leading scorer, to 0 pts in the 1st half of the game. They use a lite press which seems designed less to force turnovers than to slow down the game, giving team's offenses less time to work in the half court, forcing turnovers. Wildcats in the Big East, forced opponents turnovers 21.4% of the time. However, the last 4 games of the season, that number was higher. Georgetown turned the ball over a season high 36% of the time at the Wells Fargo Center. That was followed up by turning over St. John's on 25% their possessions at MSG, a season high for the Red Storm. Constant defense intensity caused teams like Georgetown to run their offensive sets much farther from the basket than usual. Opponents looked uncomfortable on offense at the end of the season when playing Villanova. And it been showing the same thing in the tourney.
(Off R # ) Off - Offense, R - Rank. Used NCCA.com for info.(Def R #) Def - Defense, R - Rank. Used NCCA.com for info.Used Scoring Offense and Score Defense in team stats
In the UNC- Asheville(Off R #130 75.1 PPG) game, they only scored 59 pts. In the Iowa(Off R #63 77.6 PPG) game, they scored 68 pts during the game. And then they played Miami (Off R #120 75.2 PPG) but it was Miami's defense (DEF R #64 67.4 PPG) that would give Villanova some problems cause Villanova has had issues with defensive teams this year. The analysis and various people thought Miami's D would be able to battle Villanova and wear them down and get a win…. Wrong Villa won 92 - 69.
Now on to Kansas (Off R #16 81.3 PPG) games, where they were Favorites in the game by -2 ½. The analysis thought that Elis and company could have their way, wear Villa down and around the last ten minutes of the game take over. Well Villa won again 64 - 59. Then came Oklahoma(Off R #26 79.7 PPG) with their, Best Player in NCAA(top 3, that's another topic). Buddy Heild and company were supposed to be to much for Villanova and probably edge out a win according to analysis. Well now, again Villa beat(to put it nicely)Okla 95 - 51.
Now quickly UNC beat FGCU(Off R #76 77.2 PPG) 83 - 67, Providence (Off R #156 73.6 PPG) 85 - 66, Indiana(Off R #11 82.6PPG) 101 - 86, Notre Dame(Off R #129 75.1 PPG) 88 - 74, Syracuse (Off R #102 70.0 PPG) 83 - 66. With the 5 team, I just listed, that UNC beat, Syracuse(DEF R #30 65.1) is the only team with a top 50 Scoring Defense. The other 4 teams Scoring Defense is R #123 through #144.
UNC coming into this game has a Off R #10 83.0 PPG and a Def R #119 69.8 PPG. And Villanova comes into this game with a Off R #57 78.0 PPG and a Def R #11 63.3 PPG. Villanova is a team that will come in and play a fast paste or slow plaste game, trading baskets with you and then after 5 mins of seeing how your playing, will start to smother you with their Defense. There's time durning the game the Villa players start slacking with their play but Jay Wright will call a timeout and talk with his players, then they come back out on the floor and take the game back over. I believe Villanova had a tougher match up with teams to get here then UNC. Jay Wright has his players playing great ball, feel confident and believe that they can beat anyone they have to play, without being cocky about it.
