Over the weekend the Gonzaga Bulldogs lost a home game to the BYU Cougars in a game that BYU really didn't play all that well. The Cougs led game wire to wire, 2 of their top 3 scorers really struggled and they had a bad night at the charity stripe as a team. Usually when a team gets upset at home its because the other team did many things really good, but that was not the case here. That brings up the question of whether or not the Zags are overrated right now. We also note that the Zags really haven't been challenged in the WCC this year and that may hurt them in the Big dance.
Looking ahead to the WCC tournament, we may see a BYU/ Gonzaga rematch and people may talk Gonzaga revenge for that game, but the fact that BYU could need to win that game to get into the NCAA Tournament could negate the revenge factor. Bottom line is that Dave feels they may just be a bit overrated.
That is also something that could hurt the Kentucky Wildcats as they SEC has not really prepared them for the NCAA Tournament.
Now are the Cats a historically good team? Dave feels that they are a very good team, but isn't sure they are as good as the team with Anthony Davis.
Still the Cats are a huge favorite to win the title and both Dave and RJ state that it has been a long time since a team went into the tournament at minus money. It is a reflection of Kentucky, but also a reflection of the potential other number 1 teams, which are just not great teams.
Dave feels that this year may be the year to look for a 6 seed type team to reach the final 4, because the 20 teams or so below Kentucky are just not separated all that much as far as talent is concerned.
